West side story

The film I will be reviewing is west side story. The directors of this film are Robert Wise and
Jerome Robbins. The film was released on October 18th, 1961. The main actors and actresses
are Natalie Wood,Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, Russ Tamblyn and Richard Beymer. The main
genre of this movie is gang violence.
This movie is based on Romeo and Juliet but with a musical twist. It is about two main gangs the
sharks and the jets. They fight for territories on the streets of New York. The gangs meet at a
dance in gymnasium where Maria the sister of Bernardo the leader the shark's spots Joey one
of the leaders of the jets. It was claimed to be love at first sight but had to keep their
relationship a secret due to rivalry. Maria tells Anita Bernardos girlfriend, and she supports her
because she believes love is love and you cannot stop love. They meet in secret and talk about
moving to the countryside to get away from all the gang violence. There are many challenges
along the way but will the death of loved ones affect their relationship.
After I learnt that this movie was based on Romeo and Juliet, I found many similarities between
the 2 films. One of the first similarities I saw was that a girl brings two groups of people
together that hate each other. If Maria and Joey were not together the two gangs will be killing
one another but Joey tries to stop this by making peace like Romeo tried to do with Tybalt but
ended up killing him and a similar situation happened with Bernardo Marias sister. Them being
together also causes many deaths in a very similar situation to Romeo and Juliet.
I really enjoyed this movie. The plot really flowed throughout the whole movie. I enjoyed the
musical twist to Romeo and Juliet and even though it had a similarities I loved the differences as
well. I enjoyed the way they had a break for about a minute giving a preview of the songs
coming up.
I would recommend this movie to someone. The movie is suitable for all ages above 16 because
they would enjoy the dancing and the 60s style of the movie. Overall, I would rate the movie 4
out 5 stars because there were parts that weren't as interesting as others but still in enjoyable. I
would love to watch this movie agin when I have the chance.
