MODULE 4: Capturing History in One’s Horizon

(Learning Evidence 5:
“Historical Worthiness of a Place, or Social Organization, or Social Issue:
1 up to 101 Reasons of My Choice”)

The previous four modules (Modules 1, 2, 3A and 3B) were devoted to the
understanding of the introductory principles of historical studies. It covered the study on
historical understanding, distinguishing primary and secondary sources, critiquing these sources
(especially the primary sources, in terms of their context vis-à-vis the authors, the content, the
narratives, and the derived insights or learnings) and evaluating versions, contentions or claims
on selected significant events.

In this module (Module 4 with required corresponding LE 5) you will undergo to study the
evolution of the Philippine constitutions, the historical development of agrarian reform and
development of the taxation. Through these topics you are expected to learn the
interrelationship and connections of continuing or persisting social, political, economic and
cultural issues in society which by themselves are anchors of contemporary Philippine history.

These aforesaid topics shall be covered and completed within four weeks (Weeks 13 –
16 of the End Term). During this allocated time frame for End Term on-line discussions, you will
be required to do one or two brief exercises/activities. On the main, however, as your learning
evidence requirement you will have

A. to come up with a one or two-page proposal detailing the rationale (reasons or


considerations) why you are proposing that a particular place, a certain social organization, or
an enduring social issue/phenomenon be investigated or studied for historical purposes.

Part I Course Outcomes and Learning Objectives


Course Outcomes

(Concept Paper)

1. Formulate a one or two-page proposal detailing the rationale (reasons or


considerations) why you are proposing that a particular place, a certain social
organization, or an enduring social issue/phenomenon be investigated or studied for
historical purposes.

2. Craft one-page argumentative essay/discussion that proves the historicity of a


contemporary event because it has implication on either constitutional, agrarian or
taxation issues.

3. Propose recommendations/solutions to present day social problems based on their


own understanding of the historical dimension of the historical topic that they have
identified and worked on.

Objectives: At the end of the module, the students must have:

1. Identified a historical subject, i.e., particular place, a certain organization or an


enduring social issue/phenomenon and conducted historical research (on-
line/internet, zoom/google meet interview, document reviews) for the one or two-
page Concept Paper/Proposal

2. Defined arguments or contentions on the historicity of contemporary event/s by


applying constitutional, agrarian or taxation concepts

3. Proposed recommendation/s on how to apply historical knowledge and appreciation


in critically analyzing present day social problems by utilizing these academic
requirements through feedbacking or sharing to issue/problem stakeholders.

Part II Assessment

1. Assignment in essay or discussion form about the historicity of a particular


contemporary event citing its or referencing constitutional, agrarian or taxation
implication/dimension. (Derived from Learning Outcome 2, Learning Objective 2, Part I).

2. Submit through the Canvas (or according to your connectivity Category) your Concept
Paper/Proposal why a particular place, a certain social organization or an enduring
social issue/phenomenon be investigated for historical purposes. (Derived from Learning
Outcome 1 and Learning Objective 1. Part I).

2. Do read about historical research and review of related literature on how to formulate
historical concept paper/proposal, and then do the following for this Module 4 (i.e., LE
5):

2.1 Choose/identify a historical subject/topic that may of interest to you. Preferably


choose the one which you are interested and have already some knowledge about it.

2.2 Do research on this chosen historical subject by reading, searching and


interviewing people who may have knowledge about your topic.

2.3 Keep on discovering information, data, sources (both oral and written) by
connecting with people who can help you suggest where to find these information,
data, or sources.

your Concept Paper/Proposal (as LE 5).

- Given this discovery (knowledge), what do you want to investigate/research
further?
- What do you think is/are the implication/s of your chosen historical subject to the
promotion of local historical studies?
