Process Essay

Adopting a Fur Baby

Catherine Rivera
Every fur baby needs a human. One of the best places to look for an animal you might

want to possibly get, is at an animal shelter. Adopting a pet comes with a lot of responsibility.

There are some animals that have been abused, abandoned, or simply left behind because some

did not want them. For most people, their pet is their best friend. When I first adopted my two

kittens there were so many to pick from, but when you know, you know. It is almost like love at

first sight.

First step before you begin this process is, you must know if you are ready to commit to

adopting a pet. Having a pet is like having a child. You are responsible for everything they do.

They rely on you for almost everything. You must clean up after them and feed them. You will

pay an adoption fee but also all their shots, food, toy, and anything else a pet might possibly

need. If you can you say “yes, I can commit to all these responsibilities,” then you know you are

ready for a pet.

Second step is you must find the closest adoption center. Find all their information you

will need; location, business hours and what possible fees you will be paying to adopt. You will

make an appointment at the animal shelter of your choice for the animal that may have caught

your eye and seeking to possibly adopt. You will get that pets medical history, how they may

have ended up at the shelter, and how they interact with people or other animals. Once you have

learned the background about that pet, you will be placed in a room with him/her to see if there is

a connection. If the spark is not there, maybe you will need to keep searching for the right one. If

it is an instant connection, you know you have the right one. The adoption process will start, and

you are now a parent to a fur baby.

Last step is to bring your new fur baby to his/her new home. When bringing them home

they advise you to leave your pet in a bathroom for the first three days, so they become
comfortable in the new smaller environment at first. You are recommended to spend at least two

to three hours a day with them, so they become comfortable and familiar with you. Once you feel

your new pet is comfortable with you, you can let them out to roam around their new home. Now

comes the potty training, if a dog was adopted you will need to train them where they can and

cannot go to the bathroom; a cat typically is already potty trained to use a litter box. You will

need to put them on a feeding schedule about the same time every day, so they get on a daily

routine with you. While making them feel at home you will also need to them groomed or even

groom them yourself. Toys are always a plus to have to keep your pet entertained because they

need a lot of attention.

Adopting a pet may be had at time. There may be some challenges and obstacles

throughout the journey. At the end of the day this is basically your child. Just like children, they

can be a handful, but you would not trade them for the world. They are there for you when

sometimes you feel like the world is against you. They will love you unconditionally. Adopting

my two cats, as annoying as they can be, I could not see my life without them. Those are my

babies and saving them was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
