When you or a loved one is sick and in need of seeing a doctor, what is the first thing that

goes through your mind? You want to find the “best of the best,” right? There are many things to

look for when trying to find where to go but one thing you keep an eye out is if you have a

magnet hospital around you. You want to know that you or a loved one is being taken care of so

you can get the best outcome and to be able to understand why and to have the proper solution of

whatever the situation may be. These are a handful hospitals that have been accredited by The

American Credentialing Center also known as the ANCC. These are the hospitals to look out for.

The ANCC was created by the American Academy of Nursing (ANN) in the1983. It was

created to see the practice of hospitals all over the United States. In 1990 the ANN approved a

program called “Magnet Hospital Recognition Program for Excellence in Nursing.” This was the

start of the magnet hospitals as we know them. It took about four years before the first hospital

met all the requirements to be accredited by the ANCC and in 1997 Washington Medical Center

in Seattle, they were the ones to achieve those standards. Today we have 461 magnet hospitals

out of 7247 hospitals making it only 8.28% of the hospitals in the United States are a magnet

hospital. This program was created because it will attract the “top talent,” improves patient care,

the safety for the facility, growth in the business, and advanced nursing standards of practice,

generally a staff who feel seen and valued.

The road to becoming a magnet hospital is not an easy or short process. Once a hospital

has decided they want to become an accredited hospital, they will apply for it. There are 35 areas

that a hospital must qualify for the care they offer. A non-magnet hospital that wants to be

accredited must meet all the requirements. The ANCC will start the process, there are a couple

things that they will look for in a hospital. The five components to become a magnet hospital are:

transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, new

knowledge, innovations, improvements, and empirical outcomes. They will analyze the staff and

see how the facility is ran. This process will typically take about four to five years. Not only is it

going to be time consuming, but they will also have to invest about 2.1 million dollars. This is an

investment for a hospital because if they become a magnet hospital, the revenue they will bring

in will be about 1.2 billion dollars a year.

Being an RN at a magnet hospital has its befits. Nurses can easily get burnt out when

working in a non-magnet hospital and they are typically are over worked and not satisfied with

where they are at. Studies have shown that magnet hospitals have a better work environment for

nurses. They are 13% less likely to get burnt out and 82% of them are satisfied with their work

environment. The turnover rates are lower compared to a non-magnet. With magnet hospitals

they say that this is a higher-educated nursing work force and nurses actually still learn new

things. Studies have also shown that there is a lower incidence of patient falls, lower odd of

having a hospital acquired pressure ulcers, and lower mortality rates because they do not have a

higher amount of nurse-to-patient staffing, as where a non-magnet have a lower nurse-to-patient

staffing. They have a better ration allowing nurses to be able to learn new things and not be over

worked. A plus about magnet hospitals is that there is always room for growth, and they have

competitive salary. It is a good amount of push because it allows you to work hard for something

you want. Nurses at magnet hospitals have access to world class clinical facilities. With these

benefits and many more, a hospital will on average keep a nurse for about 11 to 12 years, while

at a non-magnetic a nurse will look else where within 2 to 3 years.

After doing some research, being a nurse at a magnet hospital is a goal of mine. You have

thousands of hospitals that you may chose from but going to a magnet hospital would be an

amazing opportunity. When I am done with school, I do not want my learning to end there.

Going to a non-magnet hospital is not a bad choice either but I do not want to be burnt out, I do

not want that passion to get lost in the mist of everything. I want to love my career and working

at a magnet school and still being able to learn and knowing that I will have higher chance of

satisfied patient would be an amazing thing to experience. Nurses are the heart of a hospital. To

work io a program that the ANCC has accredited something that every nurse should be grateful

for. They want the best for all nurses. So why not work for the best?
