there stood a shrine with an image that lactated holy oil which was
(and still is) regarded by both faiths as having miraculous quali-
ties.37 Burchard clearly spent a fair amount of time debating with
Muslim holy men and he reported - calmly — on some of the
objections that they held to Christianity. He also depicted very
good relations between the Egyptian and Syrian Christians and
the Muslims. As Tolan indicates, this mission was conducted in a
diplomatic context; given this positive environment we see a more
overt nod to the similarities between the two faiths, and even the
Virgin's granting of miracles to the Muslims at Matariyya and
Saidnaya was not described by Burchard as entirely wrong. 38
A further strand of the interaction between Christians and
Muslims at the time of the Third Crusade was, in a limited fashion,
at the level of religious debate. This, it will be suggested, broadened
the understanding of Islam, at least amongst some of those present
on the Third Crusade. This operated alongside, and intertwined
with, the issue of diplomacy, which also required a far greater level
of religious understanding than had been seen on earlier crusades.
By way of context, there follows a brief outline of Muslim-Chris-
tian relations in the decades prior to the Third Crusade.
The rise of European intellectual interest in Islam is fairly well
documented. Around the year m o Petrus Alfonsi produced the
strongest and best informed critique of Islam and Muhammad to
date in his Dialogues. This was an immensely popular text, with
numerous copies circulating across Europe during the twelfth
century.39 A few decades later (1142—3), Peter the Venerable
commissioned Robert of Ketton to undertake a landmark transla-
tion of the Qur'an from Arabic to Latin, to enable him to refute

the ideas therein. The abbot also composed his polemical works
against Islam: Sum of the Entire Heresy or Demonic Sect of the Saracens
or Ishmaelites (1143—4) and Against the Sect of the Saracens (1155—6).4°
These two authors represent a very theological and confronta-
tional approach, that of clerics writing in Latin in the West. Prior
to this, the most important access point for the wider public's
understanding of Islam had been the numerous narrative histo-
ries of the First Crusade (almost all of which were in Latin) and
the Chansons de Geste. While it was reasonably common for these
texts to acknowledge the bravery and strength of their Muslim
opponents, most tended to depict them as pagan idolaters, in line
with the concept of a centuries-old struggle ending in Christian
triumph and possibly the second coming. Thus, argues Tolan, the
'image of Islam as paganism helps justify the crusade', that is, to put
it in the context of Christian history.41 Muslims were described as
barbarous, diabolical creatures; the crusaders were the new apostles;
'Saracen' was a synonym for 'pagan'. 42 When we recognize the
scale of copying and retelling of the First Crusade, it is logical that
such images became deeply embedded in the mental landscape
of Western Europeans. 43 Robert the Monk's Historia Iherosolimi-
tana was the most popular of these texts, with at least thirty-four
surviving manuscripts dating from the twelfth century, far and away
the largest number for a First Crusade narrative.44 He described
the Muslims as sons of the devil, and as users of divination, spells
and astrology.45 A neat continuity between this narrative and the
Third Crusade itself can be seen in Provost Henry of Schaftlarn's
