Ako’y Isang Ibong Sawi by Juan Buencamino and Jose C. De Jesus, for me, has two overall
emotions. The first is that of feeling lost and helpless, and the second is that of hope and comfort,
as the persona finds a place of solace in his beloved, akin to a bird finding its nesting place.
I will employ a darker vocal color in the beginning of the piece, particularly in measures 5-8,
where the composer sets the first line, “Ako’y isang ibong sawi na hindi na makalipad.” This is
to portray the pathos of the bird, as a metaphor for a heart weighed down by pain and struggle.
On measures 21-24, I will sing the phrase “Sa mata mo’y may isang langit ng pangarap” with
lighter vocal weight, to portray the ease and hope that the persona feels. This is also supported by
the change in tonality, where the composer transitions to D major, particularly starting on
measure 21.
My articulations for the piece will be mainly legato and flowing, particularly in measures 41-
44, as the text says “Ibig kong mamugad sa puso mo irog.” The use of legato is with the goal of
bringing to life the persona’s relief, as he expresses that he wishes to nest and reside in his
beloved’s heart. I feel that the use of a legato manner of singing here will add to the tenderness
of this statement.
