Inductance of Transmission Line
Reason of Transmission Line Inductance
Generally, electric power is transmitted through the transmission line with AC high voltage
and current. High valued alternating current while flowing through the conductor sets up
magnetic flux of high strength with alternating nature. This high valued alternating
magnetic flux makes a linkage with other adjacent conductors parallel to the main
conductor. Flux linkage in a conductor happens internally and externally. Internally flux
linkage is due to self-current and externally flux linkage due to external flux. Now the term
inductance is closely related to the flux linkage, denoted by λ. Suppose a coil with N
number of turn is linked by flux Φ due to current I, then,
But for transmission line N = 1. We have to calculate only the value of flux Φ, and hence,
we can get the transmission line inductance.
Find GMR, GMD and Inductance of single-phase two-
wire conductor.

Conductor x is composed of n strands that are electrically parallel. Even though the
inductance of the different strand is different, the average inductance of all of them is
the same as Lav, x . Assuming that the average inductance given above is the inductance
of n parallel strands, the total inductance of the conductor x is
Substituting the values of La , Lb etc. in the above equation we get
where the geometric mean distance ( GMD ) and the geometric mean radius
( GMR ) are given respectively by
GMD = 5.848 m
L = 1.554 mH/km
XL = 0.5858 Ω
Bundled conductors
So far we have discussed three-phase systems that have only one conductor per
phase. However for extra high voltage lines corona causes a large problem if the conductor
has only one conductor per phase. Corona occurs when the surface potential gradient of a
conductor exceeds the dielectric strength of the surrounding air. This causes ionization of the
area near the conductor. Corona produces power loss. It also causes interference with
communication channels. Corona manifests itself with a hissing sound and ozone discharge.
Avoidance of the occurrence of corona is desirable.
The high voltage surface gradient is reduced considerably by having two or more
conductors per phase in close proximity. This is called conductor bundling . The conductors
are bundled in groups of two, three or four as shown in Fig. The conductors of a bundle are
separated at regular intervals with spacer dampers that prevent clashing of the conductors
and prevent them from wind surge. They also connect the conductors in parallel.
Advantages of bundling:
Disadvantages of bundling:
Example: Calculate the inductance per phase of a 750 kV
three-phase single circuit line that utilizes a
bundled conductor arrangement as shown in
Fig. The space between the two phases is 15 m
in a horizontal formation. The sub conductors
of a phase are at the corners of a square of
sides 0.5 m, each sub-conductor having a
diameter of 3 cm.
Inductance of 3-phase double circuit (parallel) line:
In a three-phase double circuit transmission line, two conductors run parallel to each
phase on the same tower.
This leads to more reliability and increased transmission capacity due to reduced inductive
reactance.
The aim of running the conductors in parallel is to have low inductance of the equivalent
circuit. This can be achieved by reducing the spacing between phases (low value of D ) and
increasing the distance between the conductors in each phase (high value of D ).
Symmetrical spacing (Hexagonal):
Example:
Unsymmetrical spacing (fully transposed):
Example:
Calculate the inductance per phase of a 3-phase
double circuit line (fully transposed). The diameter of
the conductor is 1.5cm.
