Householder in Sigālovāda

Husband and wife are mutually responsible for forging stability and
happiness in family life. Morality is also considered as factors that
enhance affection and love between husband and wife.

The Sigalovada Sutta enumerates five duties of a husband owes to the


wife who is referred to as the ‘western quarter’. These include the duty
of a householder to show respect to the wife, not to insult her, being
faithful to her, giving her authority and presenting ornaments etc.,

The five duties of a wife as enumerated in the Sigalovada Sutta are (1)
acquiring proficiency in the family, professions treating and
administering the attendants (3) being faithful to the husband (4)
protection of the wealth earned by the husband, and (5) acquiring
proficiency in all affairs. Wife is responsible for nurturing harmonious
relations in the family.

Thus, it is seen that both husband and wife share equal duties in making
the family life a success. The mutual obligations assure happiness and
stability of family life, and also help to solve problems in society. (175)
