Introduction

My Utopia Job would be a management position in a company with a solid reputation

and is known for its corporate responsibility.

The main points of analysis covered here are my strengths and the management tools that

I have learned about at Brandman that I will use to succeed in my Utopia job.

My strengths are that I can think analytically, interact well with people, and motivate and

engage others.

New management tools that I will use are verbal communication and the four functions of

management.

Analysis

Being able to think analytically is a conceptual tool. Being able “to visualize an

organization as a whole and understand how the parts work together” (Kinicki & Williams, 2020,

p. 28).

Interacting well with other people is a human skill, a “soft skill.” Having “the ability to

motivate, to inspire trust, and to communicate with others are necessary for managers of all

levels” (Kinicki & Williams, 2020, p. 29).

Having the ability to work well with others is one of the “most valued traits in managers”

(Kinicki & Williams, 2020, p. 30).

3

Verbal communication is a valuable tool for a manager. Instead of writing letters, memos,

and reports, which take time, it is better to “transmit information through telephone

conversations and meetings” (Kinicki & Williams, 2020, p. 31). However, newer technologies

also make it almost as easy to communicate through e-mail, texting, and Twitter.

The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.

“Although the process of management can be quite complex, these four functions represent its

essential principles” (Kinicki & Williams, 2020, p. 15).

Based on this self-analysis, three ideal jobs could include marketing manager at

Microsoft, Financial manager at Amazon, Human Resources Manager at the Veteran’s

Administration.

I would fall under the definition of a servant leader, “Servant-leadership focuses on

providing increased service to others meeting the goals of both followers and the organization

rather than to oneself” (Kinicki & Williams, 2020, p. 262).

With the areas that are my strengths, I would do well in a top management position.

Interacting well with others and working well with others go together with being a servant

leader. Verbal communication and planning, organizing, leading, controlling, and analytical

thinking are essential for a top position manager. These skills will be an asset to the company

that hires me into a top management position.

4

Conclusion

Having good communication skills, working well with others, interacting well with

others, and analytical thinking are positive attributes for a manager. Using the four functions of

management will help me become successful at any of the manager positions that would be my

ideal job.
