2. Explain in 2 paragraphs your listening experience through the

video.
My listening experience with the video was really good. I
understood almost everything. I think that the YouTube channel
is a good tool to learn English, because they upload different
videos and exercise. I will check other videos for practice.
The vocabulary shown in the video was easy, there were some
words that I didn´t know, but I could understand clearly, and
the visual support made it easier.
Write a 2 up to 3- pages reading report about chapters 2 and 3
of our textbook:
Elements of communication
Sometimes we do not understand things that other people say.
There are some factors that can cause affect our listening
ability and serious misunderstanding.
Communication is the process of sending a message and receiving
messages in order to share meanings. There are six essentials
elements for correct communication:
1- Verbal messages.
2- Nonverbal messages.
3- Perception.
4- Channel.
5- Feedback.
6- Context.
Verbal messages are the spoken words we use when communicating.
Verbal communication involves both the choice of words and the
order of the words in a sentence.
Words do not have the same meaning to everyone. Also, words
change their meanings over time. Communicators need to know how
to select the most exact words to get their message across
accurately. Different people may have difficulty understanding
the same message even when all the words are English. Although
words are an important part of communication, they do have
certain limitations.
Nonverbal messages are messages expressed without words. It
means expressed throw appearance, facial expressions, eye
contact, posture, gestures, voice, and factors such as space,
time, and place affect how ours words are understood.
Other important aspect when communicating is the channel.
Verbal and nonverbal messages are sent throw a channel that use
the human senses. In communication terms, the channel is the
means by which a message is transmitted.
Noise can affect the channel and make a misunderstanding
situation.
When a person has problems understanding a message, there is
said to be” noise in the channel.” Noise is anything that
interferes with a listener´s ability to receive a message. The
noise can be outside the listener, such a loud stereo music; or
inside the listener, such a headache.
The work of speaking and listening
The most part of the time we are using songs to communicate. We
make a bunch of different sound since we wake up to the moment
we go to sleep.
The production of sound begins with the breathing process. The
breathing process provides the air needed for sound production.
Beside the lungs, the process involves the diaphragm, a muscle
that separates the chest from the abdominal cavity. When we fill
our lung with air, or inhale, the diaphragm expands. When we
exhale the contracts and forces the air from our lungs into our
windpipe, or trachea it produces sound.
Pitch: the length of the vocal cords affects the pitch, or
highness and lowness sound. The longer the cord, the lower the
voice; the shorter the cord, the higher the voice.
Tension can affect the length of the vocal cords. When you are
very nervous, your neck area becomes tense and your vocal cords
tighten up.
Articulation: Speech occurs when articulations form sound into
words. The articulations are the tongue, teeth, jaw hard and
soft palate, and lips. These parts of the vocal mechanism affect
the final formation of words.
Many articulations errors occur because of laziness of
carelessness. Articulation is very important to making sure that
our message is understood.
Also, effective speech begins with good vocal production. It is
important to develop correct habits for creating sounds so that
can make ourselves understood in many situations.
Listening is the four-step process of receiving, interpreting,
evaluating, and responding to messages.
The first step of the listening process is receiving. It
involves hearing and seeing. We use our ears and eyes to gather
information or sent data.
Interpreting, once we received a message through our ears and
eyes, we have to use our own experience for interpreting what we
just hear.
Evaluating, after we have interpreted the message, we have to
evaluate carefully. We have to connect that message to our ideas
or feelings about the subject of the message.
Responding, send a message in respond to the speaker.
3.1. Answer questions of "Think About It", pages 18 and 38.

Page 18:
1. Why is communication considered a process?
Communication is a process because it moves forward from a
beginning to a point.
2. Why are common meanings important on communication?
Common meanings for words make possible communication. If
a person does not have the same meanings as we do for
words, it will be difficult communicating.
3. In what ways can good communication skills help you in
your after-school job?
After-school words require good communication skills. We
need to be able to communicate with the people that is
around us, for example, our boss and coworkers.
4. Describe the four types of communication and provide an
example of each.
Interpersonal communication: the word interpersonal means
“between people.” It is to have a one-to-one conversation.
For example: talk to a classmate or someone at a party.
Group communication: Group communication is occurring when
we talk with more than one person. Examples: talking with
our basketball team.
Public communication: is consist in speak to a public. For
example: when we give a speech.

Pag 38:

1. What are the six essential elements of communication?

Verbal messages, nonverbal messages, perception, Channel,
feedback, and context.
2. Give an example of each of the categories of nonverbal
communication?
Appearance: If you go to a job interview you must be well
dressed to cause a good impression.
Facial expression: when you smile to show that your happy.
Posture: when your having dinner with someone a good
posture causes a good impression.
Gesture: lift your thumb to confirm something or express
that you like something you like.
Voice: when I´m nervous I talk fast and hesitate a lot.
Space, time, and place: It´s difficult to understand what
the speaker says when there´s a lot of noise. For example:
in la Duarte.
Feelings: You are so sad, and you want to tell your best
friend the reason, but you voice is cracking.
3. How does noise in the channel affect communication?
Noise interferes with the listener´s ability to receive
the message. For example: the radio, cars passing, people
screaming.
4. Why is feedback important for communication?
To communicate successfully, a person must interpret
other´s people feedback, or responses. That´s a feedback
the verbal and nonverbal messages that tells speakers how
they are being perceived.
4. Answer this question:
How do you relate the video's contents to what you read on
chapters 2 and 3? Explain in 1 page.

The units two and three are related in some aspect to the video.
Both, the video and the units, are related to conversation, and
listening and speaking skills.
The video shows us different examples of conversation.
Conversation in different situations of life.
After seeing the video, we can identify some of the topics
developed in the units two and three of the textbook. For
example: space, time, and place.
We see different kind of people in different space. For example:
a mom, a hairstylist, a married couple, etc. We can see how they
communicate in their respective area.
Also, we can relate the video to the six essential elements. If
we pay attention, we will see that almost all these elements are
present in the different conversations shown in the video.
For example: we have the verbal in the conversation established
by the people in the video.
We can also identify the channel in these conversations.
Example: in one of the conversations a guy is asking for a hotel
room using his telephone. Also, we have a tv host who is using a
tv as a channel two communicate.
We can identify the context of every conversation because all of
them have one. We can see places like a bakery, an office, a
doctor office… all the conversations have a story behind.
Something that I found really good is the good care of the
voices of the speakers in the conversation, very clear and
understandable.
