CIVL-415 Reinforced Concrete Design

HW #22 – Isolated Spread Footing Design

Given:
36” square concrete column
fy = 60 ksi
f ’c = 3.0 ksi
Service dead load, PD = 600 kips
Service live load, PL = 200 kips
Ultimate EQ load, E = 500 kips h
Allowable soil bearing capacity, qa = 6 ksf
with a 1/3 increase allowed for
load combinations with earthquake
forces.
The footing is placed concentrically under the column.
Use the load combinations from the lecture notes.
Use all same size bars

Find:
1. The size of a square footing (select dimensions in 1 foot increments)

2. The required overall depth, h, of the footing (select the depth in 3” increments).

3. Design the reinforcing steel in the footing.

4. Choose the most economical combination of number and size of bars to be placed in
each direction in the footing (i.e., the smallest total area of reinforcing steel).

5. Draw a sketch of the footing similar to the one above showing:

A. The reinforcing steel in each direction (show hooks if used)
B. Call out the number, size and hooks (if used) of the bars in each direction
C. Show the required ACI code clear cover to the bars.
