CIVL-415 Reinforced Concrete Design

HW #23 – Cantilevered Retaining Wall Design

Given:

Retaining wall as shown

f ’c = 3 ksi
fy = 60 ksi
Active pressure, Pa = 30 pcf
Passive pressure, Pp = 300 pcf
Concrete density, Wconc = 150 pcf
Sliding coefficient, f = 0.35
Allowable soil bearing pressure = 3.0
ksf
Soil density, Ws = 100 pcf
Ignore the top 1’ of soil over toe

Find:

1. Overturning safety factor (verify > 1.5)

2. Sliding safety factor (verify > 1.5)

3. Maximum soil bearing pressure (verify < allowable)

4. Determine ultimate soil pressures based on U = 1.2D + 1.6H (verify less than 2.5 x
allowable)

5. Design reinforcing steel (As required and select economical bar sizes and spacing) for
the following:
A. The wall at the top of footing
B. The top heel rebar
C. The bottom toe rebar
D. The key rebar
E. Longitudinal rebar in the footing and wall

6. Draw a sketch of the wall showing the reinforcing steel. Call out sizes of bars, spacing
and clear distances from the face of concrete.
