in the last two months, the Palace Waywards

I nterrupting the production of that ‘difficult second album’
to embark on a series of UK and US dates, on and off paper
may seem like a bit of a stupid idea, but then Canada’s punk
provocateurs have never seemed to adhere to conventional
wisdom. Whether it’s their name, only releasing music via seven
inches for a couple of years, conducting ‘fake’ interviews amongst
themselves, recording a Christmas single featuring, amongst others,
Nelly Furtado, or putting out the fifteen minute epic, potentially
critic-baiting Year Of The Pig they’ve never been interested with
maintaining the status quo. Which is very rare in this day and age.

I
first got interested in shooting boxing after training a little bit myself, just to stay fit. As I spent more time around the gym, I noticed
the speed, skill, determination and quiet humility of the boxers who train hard everyday – they earned my respect. I started to see
them on the same level as I see skating: some were stylish, some were more powerful, others were brash and loud, the whole range of
personalities began to show itself to me. So, naturally I became interested in it and wanted to photograph it.
At first it wasn’t easy, as I had to take my time to get to know the forms of boxing, and what looks good in a photo, as well as earning
the trust of the boxers I was shooting. Generally speaking though – many of them like to have their picture taken. As I spent time in the
gyms and clubs, I became more specifically interested in the amateurs, and in particular the strong family connections that were present at
many of the events: father and son teams, brothers, fathers with daughters and cousins and aunts and uncles and so on. Most of the photos
were shot in East LA, so there is a really strong Latino pride coming through. They are passionate about boxing, and about “Familia”. I
am about to complete a booklet with all the photos I gathered during this time, and I hope to continue shooting boxing into the future.
Like skateboarding, which is my first true passion in photography, boxing holds a certain exciting and mysterious element for me. It can be
lonesome, painful, challenging and dangerous, yet it can also be incredibly rewarding and humbling. These are a small sample from some
amateur events, Golden Gloves trials and various gyms in the East LA area. Enjoy - Mike O’Meally

U
ltimate Fighting or MMA (mixed martial arts) has risen like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes of the bare-
knuckle brutality of the early 90’s and rapidly emerged as one of the fastest growing sports in history. The initial
comparisons to ‘human cockfighting’ have fallen away to be replaced by some of the most technically advanced and
dedicated athletes the world has ever seen.
Sure there may be the occasional trickle of claret and a sporadic broken or dislocated something or other, but when you
look at the stats, of only one death within the sport (at an un-licensed fight in the Ukraine) and compare that to the eleven
people that die on average from boxing every year, I think we have a clear winner.
In our endless search to bring you the best of the best we travelled to San Diego where we met up the UFC’s lightweight
world champion, Hawaii’s BJ ‘The Prodigy’ Penn. Quiet and slightly nervy his demeanour is confusing. It’s hard to picture
this slight, round faced man single-handedly dispatching a who’s who list of opponents from arguably the toughest sport in
the world, but then again you don’t get ears like that from typing.
