WEB REINFORCEMENT

WEB REINFORCEMENT

1983 ACI (Shearing Stress)

The design of bending members for shear

is based on the assumption that concrete
resist part of the shear and any excess over
and above what the concrete could carry
should be resisted by shear reinforcement
which may take in several forms.
a) Vertical stirrups
b) Inclined or diagonal stirrups and
c) The main reinforcement bent at ends to act
as inclined stirrups.
However, the code requires that a
minimum area of shear reinforcement be
provided in all reinforced concrete flexural
members except as follows:

In slabs and footings

In beams with a total depth less than
250mm. , 2.5times the flange thickness or one
half the width of web, whichever is greater.
In concrete joist construction
PROBLEM:
Design the web reinforcement for the
beam shown if it carry the following loads. Dead
load = 58 KN/m and a live load of 88 KN/m on a
simple span of 4.5 m 27.58 MPa, 413.70 MPa.
The beam has an effective depth of 560mm and
a width of 300 mm. Main reinforcing bars
consist of 4-38mm bars.
