EXPERIMENT 3
GEOMETRY SHAPE OF COVALENT MOLECULES
Objectives:
To build the 3-d molecular geometry of molecules using balloon or ball and sticks
model.
Introduction:
The study of molecular geometry plays a fundamental role in chemistry and biology.
You have already encountered the simple but powerful VSEPR model for predicting the
geometries of covalently-bonded compounds. This simple model can be used to discuss the
geometries of even the most complex molecules, and indeed is used by practicing chemists
on a daily basis (often without their knowing it). Today the study of molecular geometry is of
tremendous scientific and economic importance, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry.
In this experiment, you will practice your understanding of Valence Shell Electron Pair
Repulsion (VSEPR) theory. You will draw Lewis Structures of several compounds and make
models of these structures in order to help you visualize the molecular shape. Finally, you will
predict molecular polarity for each compound.
