War Horse by Michael Morpurgo is the story of Joey, a horse that is sold to the British Army at the
beginning of the First World War. He is sent to France and is ridden by Captain Nicholls. However,
Captain Nicholls is killed in the fighting and Joey is given to a younger soldier called Warren. While
he is with Warren, Joey becomes friends with another horse called Topthorn and they have lots of
adventures during the war. Later in the story, Joey and Topthorn are taken by the Germans.
Topthorn is killed, but Joey works for the German army until the end of the war.

Although this book was written for children, I really enjoyed it. The story is very interesting and the
characters are described very well. You can really imagine what the First World War was like. It's a
beautiful story, although it's also very sad and it made me cry. However, there is a happy ending
because at the end of the war Joey is returned to Albert, who was his original owner before he was
sold to the army. I couldn't put the book down until I got to the end and I can definitely recommend
it.

Tell us about you

Hello everyone. I'm Hitomi and I come from Osaka, in Japan. I'm doing a Master's Degree in
Economics at Tokyo University and next year I want to get a job in London or New York. I studied
English for ten years at school, so I can write it quite well, but I can't speak it very well, so I need to
practice.

How do you feel about this course?

I really want to learn more about American cinema because I've always loved watching American
films. I hope the course will help me to improve my English. I'm looking forward to talking about all
the films we're going to watch with the other students on the course (via Skype?). I'm sure my
English will improve quickly during the course.

What do you do when you're not studying?

When I’m not studying, I play a lot of sport. I play tennis once or twice a week and sometimes golf at
weekends. I also go to the gym at the university because I like keeping really fit. Sometimes I do yoga
when I feel stressed. It really helps me to relax.

Dear Mr Hurst

Thank you for your email of 10 July about the problems you had during your stay at our hotel. I am
writing to apologise for the poor service you had while you were staying with us.

Unfortunately, we have had a few problems with our website recently. I think that is why you were
not given a room with a view of the sea. We have also had some problems with our water heating
system in the last few weeks, so this is why sometimes there was not enough hot water for showers
or baths. Finally, we did not have enough staff in our restaurant while you were staying with us
because three of our waiters became ill.

I hope you will come and stay at our hotel in Sorrento again. I would like to offer you a 50% discount
the next time you come to the Hotel Dante. This is our way of apologising for the problems you have
had.

Yours faithfully

Enzo Conte

In my view, the most important invention of the last 25 years has been the mobile phone. Before it
was invented, if you wanted to speak to somebody on the phone, you had to be at home, in the
office or in a public phone box. With a mobile phone it is much easier to keep in contact with your
friends, your family and your work colleagues than before. Because it is a mobile, you can havea
conversation wherever you are - in the street, at the supermarket, in a car or on a train. Because of
this, it is also easier for people to stay in touch with their children or with their elderly relatives. It is
also very useful to have a mobile phone if you have an accident or if you need to call the police.
These days mobile phones are not only devices that let you make phone calls and send texts.

You can also take photos, record videos, listen to music, surf the internet and talk to your friends on
Facebook. I believe it's the most useful thing I have. In fact, I don't know where I would be without it.

Last year, I went on a walking holiday in Scotland with three of my friends. We had only been there
for a day when the accident happened. We had just got to the top of a mountain and we were
having some sandwiches that we'd made for lunch. Suddenly, the weather changed completely. It
had been a clear, sunny day when we left the village where we were staying. However, now it was
snowing heavily and you could only see clearly for about 20 metres. We started walking down the
path towards the next village where we were going to spend the night

The snow was getting deeper, so we walked slowly down the mountain. All of us were confident
walkers, so we didn't think we would have any problems.

Suddenly, I heard a shout from behind me. When I turned round, my friend Anthony was lying on
the ground. He said that he had fallen over a rock. As soon as I saw him, I knew it was serious. He
said his leg was hurting badly and that he thought he had broken it. We decided to call for help.
Fortunately, my mobile phone was getting a signal, so I managed to call the emergency services.

After a short time, the mountain rescue team arrived in their helicopter. They landed very close to
where we were. They carried Anthony to the helicopter and we all got in with him. Ten minutes
later, we arrived at the hospital. Luckily Anthony's leg wasn't badly broken and they didnt need to
operate. We all felt very relieved.
