GUIDELINES FOR

PICTURE AND VIDEO

COLLECTION
The cell phone used must have a 12 MP camera, or higher, and all pictures must have a resolution of 12 MP, or higher.

How do I record?

The minimum requirement for this study is to take one video and two sets of objects (one movable or
holdable, and one non-movable). Each set of pictures of an object will be 10 pictures.

For PICTURES, make sure all the object appears in the picture and is not cut off. Pictures must be taken from
different angles and backgrounds should not be repeated. When possible, include one top down view of the
object as one of the captures.

For VIDEOS, make sure the video is between 90 seconds and 5 minutes. Spend the first 30 to 60 seconds
showing the room and everything visible in the room while avoiding any PII, then spend the rest of the video
focusing on specific objects in the room

**Failure to comply with all guidelines will result in the rejection of the object. **

What are the object categories?
HOLDABLE OBJECTS: Objects you hold and move around when using them, and can easily hold in one hand, such as a
pen, a watch, a phone, cutlery, cookware, etc.
MOVABLE OBJECTS: Objects you can move around but cannot hold easily in one hand, such as a laptop, a trash can,
small kitchen appliances, a chair, etc.
NON-MOVABLE OBJECTS: Objects you cannot move, either because they’re too big or heavy to move, such as a fridge,
a TV, a dining table, etc., or because they are built in or planted in, such as a tree, a plant, a built-in decoration, etc.

What are the distances?

NEAR: For SMALL objects, 1 to 3 ft, (0.5 to 1m). For BIG objects, 6 to 10 ft (2 to 3m).
FAR: For SMALL objects, 3 to 6 ft, (1 to 2m). For BIG objects, 12 to 15 ft, (4 to 5 m).

What cannot show on camera?

No identifiable information can show on camera, so make sure your photos and videos are free of anything that
might identify you or any other non-public person, such as pictures, documentation, names, addresses, license plates,
etc. Be especially aware of reflective surfaces, such as glasses, windows, mirrors, shiny surfaces like metals, etc. The
whole object must appear in the photo.
Protocol
NEAR: For SMALL objects, 1 to 3 ft, (0.5 to 1m). For BIG objects, 6 to 10 ft (2 to 3m).
FAR: For SMALL objects, 3 to 6 ft, (1 to 2m). For BIG objects, 12 to 15 ft, (4 to 5 m).

Display items that can generally find in that room: cutlery and cookware, office supplies,
etc. If there’s a computer or TV, turn it on.
VIDEO FULL ROOM Look for any reflective surface and make sure you’re not reflected in them.
Walk slowly around the room while recording for at least 1.5 minutes, showing the
entire room and focusing on all the objects in display.
Background
Backgrounds should be busy in content, cluttered and with other objects; these should be representative of
where the object would normally appear, for example, office supplies photographed at a desk, near other desk
items. Avoid backgrounds that are plain or homogenous.
Do not use the same background more than once.
Do not arrange the object for the pictures, and if you do, arrange it as naturally as possible. Ideally,
objects should be photographed exactly where they are as long as that follow the protocol.

Possible Reasons for Rejection
 Incorrect background distribution
 Images of multiple different objects instead of images of the same object
 Background repeated
 Object type (holdable, movable or unmovable) is incorrect
Backgrounds 1 and 2 are not sufficiently different for Movable/Holdable
 Distances do not follow established parameters
 Duplicate asset found
 Insufficient variation in pictures or pictures too similar
 One or more images are out of focus or blurry
