INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, BOMBAY AUTUMN SEMESTER ~ MID-SEMESTER EXAMINATION 2010-2011 SESSION Programme: B.Tech/Dual Degree Branch: Chemical Engineering Course No. : CL 415 Course Name: Process Equipment Design & Economics Day & Date: Saturday, September 11, 2010 Weightage 30% PART-SG and PART-RKM should be answered in separate answerbooks Note: This is a No Book — No Notes Examination. Answer all questions. All parts of a question must be answered together. Please do not raise any queries with the invigilators In case of insufficient information, if any, make and mention suitable assumptions and proceed further. PART-SG 1 [8] (a) Would you place a high pressure fluid on the tube side or shell side of a shell and tube exchanger and why? (b) For a liquid flowing on the tbe side what would be the norm for flow velocities? Give reasons. (©) What can you say of the environmental foot print of air cooled heat exchangers as compared to using water as a cooling medium? (@) When would a spiral plate exchanger be a preferred choice for heat exchange and why? (e) What is the major limitation of plate heat exchangers? (Which is the weakest part of a formed end closure? Give reasons. (g) How would you rate an ellipsoidal end in comparison with a tori-spherical dished end? (h) Typically, what is the norm for allowable stress used in design for determining the plate thickness, vis-a-vis yield stress and ultimate tensile stress? ‘Question-2 (2) A steel vessel has an internal diameter of 1500 mm. Determine the plate thickness for the shell and the hemispherical dished end, using “thin shell’ approximations. Ifa flat plate was used instead, what would be its thickness, if the edge stress constraint constant is 0.62 Design pressure: 10 barg Yield stress of steel: 210 N/mm? UTS of steel: 430 N/mm?
