1 INTRODUCTION – OPTICAL SENSING LIMITED

Optical Sensing Limited (“OSL”) develop, design and implement Smart Facilities solutions for commercial buildings
and various industries using Fibre Optic Sensing Systems.

Optical Sensing Limited (OSL) is registered in Hong Kong and located at Hong Kong Science and Technology Park,
Shatin. OSL specialises in Fibre Optic Sensing Systems and their applications to support Smart Infrastructure 4.0.

OSL develops, designs and implements two groups of Fibre Optic Sensing Systems:
- Fibre Optic Distributed Sensing Systems
- Fibre Optic Point Sensing Systems

FIBRE OPTIC DISTRIBUTED SENSING SYSTEMS are used to monitor CONTINUOUS objects for example power cables,
bus ducts, chilled water pipes, fresh water pipes, bridges and so forth

FIBRE OPTIC POINT SENSING SYSTEMS are used to monitor INDIVIDUAL objects / locations for example vibration,
strain & loading, settlement, movement, hot spot temperature and so forth.

We cover five main applications. They are

Our Systems use Fibre Optic Sensing technology as the means to measure and acquire physical data of the target
objects. Moreover, we use advanced Data Analytics technique including Pattern Analyser & Artificial Intelligence to
convert the data into actionable intelligence to facilitate PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE & CONDITION BASED
MAINTENANCE [CBM]. The technique includes use of Pattern Analysis / AI as illustrated in the follow figure.

One of OSL’s products is Fibre Optic Thermal Sensing Systems for bus ducts.

2.4 PLACEMENT OF FIBRE OPTIC SENSING CABLE ONTO THE BUS DUCTS

The Fibre Optic Sensing Cables are attached to the surface of Bus Ducts by using custom design Fibre Optic Cable
clips. The following figures illustrate an example [Schneider Electric] of how Cable clips are used to attach Fibre
Optic Sensing Cables.

OSL has designed clips and worked with most manufacturers of bus ducts including Schneider Electric,
LS, Siemens, iMPB and other manufacturers

It must be noted that placement of Fibre Optic Sensing Cables at different locations of the bus ducts
greatly affects the measurement readings. This is illustrated in the following figure.

Temperature (oC)

OSL’s Fibre Optic Sensing System smartly compensate the deviation of temperature measurements
due to different placement locations of fibre optic sensing cables

2.5 ENGINEERING DESIGN

Based on the Client’s Bus Duct route and configuration, OSL will design the routes of the Fibre Optic Sensing
Cables. The design is to optimise the number of fibre channels and lengths of fibre optic cables. An example of
the design is illustrated in the following figure.

IN SUMMARY

The installation method engineered by OSL is

▪ Non-invasive: no hole to be made on the bus ducts

▪ Non-structural: does not affect the structure of the bus ducts

▪ No tools required for installation

▪ Easy to install - can finish a section of bus ducts in fraction of a minute

▪ Simple design

▪ Low cost
