1. There are several disciplines related to manufacturing such as material science, mechanical
engineering, industrial engineering, and business/management. Which discipline is most
likely interested in (1) development of automation technologies, (2) quality inspection and
assurance, and (3) human safety prevention, respectively?

2. In a part design, a dimension normally comes with a tolerance. What is the main purpose
of specifying a tolerance from the manufacturing aspect? Please explain your reason.

3. Please give an example to explain why design and manufacturing need to be conducted
simultaneously rather than sequentially.

4. Please determine the major manufacturing operation according to the classification

described in the class (shaping, property-enhancing, surface processing, assembly) for the
following companies: (1) an airplane factory (e.g. Boeing, Airbus), (2) a steel company (e.g.
中鋼, can be one or two operations), and (3) a mold company.

5. There are several criteria used for assessment of manufacturing capability, such as part size,
part hardness and strength, precision, production rate/cost, and sustainability. Please
determine the main core competence (only one) for the following famous companies (1)
Foxconn 鴻海/富士康 and (2) Boeing company.
