WEEK 4

Activity 1
The picture shows a woman jumping from a cliff or a dive board into the lake. She seems like she’s
enjoying the majestic view of the nature with her friends. It can be infer in the picture that this trip is
something that they will never forget. It could be the first time the woman ever jumped that high or it
could be their weekend trip after a very hectic week.

Vigorously With force and energy

1. Reader-response criticism. In his Jamie’s homily, he started with a lot of questions to be reflected by
the listeners during the homily. He’s asking everyone to do a self-reflection after his speech which is the
main essence of the reader-response criticism.
2. I agree that we should live by the motto “Bayan Muna, Bago ang Sarili.” Of course it is given that
change should start within ourselves but do not be that selfish, think of the greater good. Always
prioritize the greater good.

Activity 4
Adam, as suggested by the poem title, is basically about Adam-a man. The poem is creative in a way that
the Eden setting is modernized but the real story about Eden was twisted. As we all know, two people
lived in Eden – one man, one woman. According to the story it was Eve who was tempted to eat the
forbidden fruit while in this story it was Adam. It’s very obvious that Mr. Cook neglected the woman in
the scene – Eve. It just shows how society view men as the superior sex, not women when in fact, there
should be no superiority at all.

Activity 5 (Graphic organizer is not clear)

The approach used is sociological because it shows that the character was immersed into a slum where
he saw something that is far from what he sees everyday. There he saw poor families squeezing into a
very small space then he was inspired of making a song after seeing this oppressive, poor situation of
the people. The setting of the song is a microcosm of our social classes here in the Philippines. Gary
Granada represents the ruling class of this society; he saw how the people are suffering and what they
do just to live but still romanticized it by making a song then eventually selling the song and gain money
from the oppression of the families he just saw.

WEEK 5
Activity 2
The painting shows a traditional Filipino culture “Bayanihan” where the Filipinos showcase their
values such as being united and hard-working. Bayanihan is defined as an expression or spirit of
communal unity to achieve a particular objective. In this painting, Filipinos are replacing a traditional
housing called Bahay kubo.
As you can see, mostly men are carrying the very heavy object because past Filipinos tend to
follow certain gender stereotypes. Gender stereotype is the term used when you imply something that a
person would do based on their gender. For example, men should do chores or works that are heavy
because they are masculine. They should be strong while women should do the less heavy works
because they are “not” that strong enough.
While this painting showcases how beautiful Filipino culture is, it cannot be denied that a
division between what men and women can do exists which I do believe that, should be taken down.
Frankly speaking, gender stereotyping should be taken down because right now, a woman can do what a
man can do and vice versa.

Activity 3
The painting beautifully showcases why nature is truly majestic. The brilliant red, pink and
orange sunset shows how picturesque the view of this girl every other day. As described, the painting
reflects our primal need for beauty, warmth and nature.
The girl is of course, a surfer who I think just finished practice surfing which is one of her daily
routine. She is heading home while appreciating the majestic view she had.
This painting I think shows what could be the description of every nature’s view if we took
enough care of our environment. That is one of my interpretation of the scenery. The painter wants
people to know how beautiful it is to live where there is no pollution – you can see every bit, every color
of the place. And I think, if that is what he is trying to convey, he succeeds to me.

Activity 4
The sculpture is an interpretation of a sculptor’s re-imagination of history. It is a blood compact between
Datu Sikatuna and Miguel Lopez de Legazpi to seal their friendship. The sculptor focused on every little
detail of the piece and it’s beautiful.
This piece shows how good the Spanish colonizer in convincing the Filipino natives of bringing their
culture to us. Don’t get me wrong, there are nice things these Spanish cultures had brought to us but
also, let’s not forget how bad our ancestors suffered during the Spanish Era. This sculpture somehow
romanticized this sanduguan. There are lots of bad things happened during this era but this one, they
chose to romanticized.

Activity 4

Privilege check during this pandemic

(1) The working class, especially those daily wage earners such as jeepney and tricycle drivers and wet
market vendors, is expected to take the most damage in this crisis. The community quarantines and
lockdowns also mean a stoppage of the flow of subsistence income to millions of poor Filipino families.

(2) These daily wage earners suddenly found themselves without any means of livelihood. They are now
asking for help to survive the duration of the suspension of all kinds of transportation but didn’t
received proper help from the government forcing them to take it on the streets and start calling
through chants and placards.
(3)Celebrities and other people on social medias telling other people to “just stay at home, watch Netflix
and chill, learn new hobby like painting and stuff” are those people who obviously have never needed to
worry where to get money for their next meal.

(4)A so-called “influencer” once said on her Instagram story that everyone should follow the law, stay at
home, and observe social distancing while yelling at her TV, doing pilates on her yoga mat, not thinking
about the hungry people on the streets obviously because she knows exactly that dinner will be there on
the table waiting for her. The privilege jumped out and it shows.

(5)Other people are also sharing their thoughts on different social media platforms – Facebook, Twitter,
and Instagram, appealing to their followers to just follow the government directives and just stay home.
(6)These people want to make light of the situation and it’s not that bad per se, but the issue here is
these people are blinded by their privilege and completely lack empathy for those who just don’t have
that luxury that they are enjoying. Do you think if the people you saw on the streets asking for proper
relief goods have the luxury that you are currently enjoying; will they still risk leaving the safety of their
houses to play a potentially fatal game of acquiring the virus? Or they can choose not to go out and just
accept the consequence of just staying at home – starvation, and Presidential Spokesperson Panelo even
said, death. You see, it’s a matter of life for these working classes especially these daily wage earners
and you cannot order them to just stay at home as if they do not have any other choice.
