Why the Stack Defense?
Opportunity to commit maximum 1. STOP THE RUN
numbers to stopping the run while
2. CONTROL THE PASS
being flexible on the back end.
◦ It’s a great fit for the kids we have. We have a lot 3. TURNOVERS
of OLB type kids and lean / athletic DEs.
4. HAVE FUN
I like to have a true Mike LB in the run game.
Vertical combos not as tough on DL.
KEEPS THINGS SIMPLE
◦ VARIETY OF LOOKS WITH MINIMAL TEACHING
◦ CONFUSE OFFENSE WITH EASY MOVEMENT
◦ ANTICIPATE HOW OFFENSES WILL ATTACK YOU
Position Notes
Defensive Ends – Leaner more athletic kids, more LB bodytypes than true anchor
point DL (6’3, 230** & 6’5, 220)
N – Quick hands and feet, doesn’t have to be huge. Has to know how to hold
blocks and play their assignment. (5’7, 225)
M/S – ILB of our defense. Great if they can run but have to be great
communicators (6’0, 195 & 6’2, 205)
$/W – Our OLBs, walked down safety type kids. Can cover Man and fit ISO (5’9,
165 & 5’11, 195)
DBs – 4-2-5 structure and personnel. CB = EYS, Bandit is our DUDE in the
secondary
Our Roots
Based out of the tite / mint front (4i 0 4i, 4 0 4)
Liked the angles an odd front gave us and the
flexibility on the backend to match formations.
Didn’t feel like we had the DL to play B gap in
base, down in and down out. N 4i
4i
Outmatched in the box by pure size and S M W
$
numbers. QB run game hurt. C C

Our Safeties had a CB mindset and weren’t FS

natural downhill run fitters B

We still run a tite front, just not our base.

DEs 5 technique VS 4 technique
Playing our DEs in 5 techniques gave us the ability to spill / splatter 2nd level
blocks and get the ball moving to our speed.
We wanted to be able to dictate who was going to have the ball on read plays
without sending a 4 rusher if we didn’t want to. Didn’t want to always have to
send someone.
Allows our athletic DEs to be athletes and play in space.
Because we wanted to play in 5 techs and have control of the mesh, we weren’t
comfortable playing with 2, 30 backers in the box.
So we brought our weakside OLB into the box. Which now created a situation
where we were going to defend formations, not field.
Gap Exchange
We gap exchange with our DL & LBs whenever possible in an attempt
to: 1) dictate reads 2) get our skill guys in space and in a position to
make plays.
We will play 3 different techniques with our DEs:
1. Chase – run the heel line, responsible for dive/inside threat
2. Surf – stay square and squeeze, cut to keep player – allows for fast
flow LBs
3. Dyno – blow up the mesh, still responsible for dive/inside threat
Gap Spacing
Vs. 1 back offensive formations, we are single gap spaced. Although we don’t teach fits in terms
of “GAPs”, we use “GAP” terminology to teach alignment and gap spacing with our kids. Our 6
box players are going to take the A-C Gap on each side.
1 Back Alignment
DL – 5 0 5, S/W – “50” backers, M – 0 stacked
M
We will do everything we can to keep the 6
man box attached and unchanged.
Our adjusters are our $ LB and our DBs. We 5 N 5
will adjust our W LB if needed but the basic $
structure stays intact. C S M W C
We feel like putting 6 in the box on defense vs
1 RB formations discourages the run game. FS
B
Either read (what we want) or QB run game.
TE Alignment
Against an odd front, people put a TE in the $ 5 N 5
game. We have played a TE mainly 2 ways. 9 5
0 5 and 6 4 0 5. C S M W C

Now, we mainly play 6 4 0 5 up front because I

FS
didn’t like putting my stacked LB in coverage B
when we felt like he was out leveraged.
When we walk our S down on the TE, he is
going to play a “slam & close” technique on
the C gap. If flow away, he is the surf player. S 4 N 5

Run Fit Leverage
4i N 4i
Our run fits are based off of the 3-4 run fits W
that our kids were used to before we ran the C $ S M C
stack.
