1. What was the real purpose of Rizal’s voyage to Spain? Why was it made secret?

 Rizal’s purpose of going to Spain was to: first pursue his medical course for
him to cure his cataract-stricken mother; second is to observe the political
situation in Madrid. They kept it secret to avoid detection by the Spanish
authorities and the Friars.

2. What were the places where Rizal had a stop over prior to his entry into Spain?

 The places where Rizal had a stopover are Singapore, rode another first-class
cruise called Djemnah going to Sri Lanka, third is North Africa, Suez Canal,
Egypt, Naples and last is Marseilles.

3. What were his impressions of the following places: Singapore, Naples, Marseilles
and Barcelona?

 Before boarding to Spain, Rizal had a two-day stopover at Singapore. He wrote


on his journal how Singapore surprised him with its beautiful environment,
streets are bordered with many tress both sides. He visited the botanical
gardens, Buddhist temples, and the statue of Sir Thomas Standford, the
country’s founder. In Naples he was toured at Mount Vesevius and Castel
Sant’Elmo where he experienced the panoramic view of the city. Meanwhile,
he stayed for two-and-a-half days at Marseilles and saw a little of that famous
port and then went by rail of Barcelona. At Barcelona he met some of his
schoolmates in Ateneo and others he knows. His impressions about this city
were not that good. He described the place as cluttered and unattractive. He
didn’t like the people as he considered unwelcoming, but later on these feelings
changed over time, as he lived there and learned their culture.
