An enigmatic ruined
Norman church on a small mound in t he middle of Norfolk
farmland is the focus of t his year's live broadcasts. Aerial
photographs have revealed a large ditched enclosure around t he
site, and metal detectorists - working closely wit h th e local
archaeolog ical unit - have uneart hed a staggering amount of
finds, ranging chronologically from t he Bronze and Iron Ages to
Roman, Sa xon and medieval. The most unusual of these have been
large quantiti es of Saxon coins and high-st atus artefacts, and
because of t hese rare discoveries, this site has been described as
'horrifically signifi cant'.
No one is sure why such a church was built here. Once it would
almost certainly have been surrounded by sea. Did t he present one
replace an even older one? Who used it and where is the
graveyard? Local leg end has it t hat plague victi ms were buried
here. The enclosure and the finds suggest that t his place was once
very important - but why?
Alongside the main action, there will also be a virt ual recreation of
a Saxon villa ge, inclu ding house building and explorat ions
of a variety of craft s su ch as clot h- making, metal-working
and cookery.

The map shows the area that wi ll be invest igated. It w ill give you some idea of the topographical
context of the Time Team's finds.
The grid - marked with 25 x 25 met re squares - is exactly the same as the one t hat will be used on
the programme during t he August Bank Holiday weekend. When you hear team members refer to
grid references for t he locati ons of fi nds, geophysics, t renches and so on, you w il l be able to plot
th em on your own grid. In additi on, you can:
• PLOT TH E FIRST FI D
• PLOT TH E FIRST SIGNIFICANT PIECE OF POTIERY OR COIN
• TRY TO PREDICT WHERETHE TRENCHES WILL BE DUG, BASED ON SURVEY AND GEOPHYSICS
• PLOT THE KEY FEATURES OF THE SITE AS THEY ARE REVEALED
Over the three days, you can gradually build up a pict ure of th e site that will give you a permanent
overview of the work being done t here - a useful tool that will help you keep track of progress as
the focus of the invest igat ion changes.
Using the timeline will give you a way of predicting the period(s) of the site. By plotting on it the
estimated dates of the various finds as th ey are discovered, you will create a chronological profile
and will be able to suggest when the site was in active use in the past.
