80’s Classic Movies that deserve a remake

Do the recent remakes of movies like Blade Runner and Ghostbusters make you think about
other movies from the 1980s? The 1980s introduced us to some of the most interesting plots,
memorable characters and charismatic actors. We found some films from this time period that
might be interesting if they were given a remake now:

Sixteen Candles

DVD - 2008 | Flashback ed.

With the occasion all but overshadowed by her sister's upcoming wedding, angst-ridden
Samantha (Molly Ringwald) faces her 16th birthday with typical adolescent dread. She’s got a
wicked crush on senior Jake, but he doesn’t seem to know she exists. Unfortunately, the one
boy who knows she exists turns out to be Ted, one of the nerdiest kids in school. Filled with
embarrassing situations, but some memorable lines, this movie was John Hughes’ directorial
debut.
Back to the Future

DVD - 2009

In this 1985 sci-fi classic, California teen Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is thrown back into the
1950s when a science experiment goes sideways. Encountering younger versions of his parents
(Crispin Glover and Lea Thompson), Marty has to make sure they fall in love . . . or he’ll cease to
exist. Not only did this movie have the memorable scene of Fox improvising on Chuck Berry and
playing a Jimi Hendrix solo, it also cemented the DeLorean into car history.

So who would you cast in a remake of this 1985 adventure film about kids who
follow a pirate map into an underground cavern in search of lost treasures? It’s
hard to imagine anyone taking the roles played by Corey Feldman and Sean Astin.
Gremlins

DVD - 2007 | Special ed.

A gadget salesman is looking for a special gift for his son and finds one at a store in Chinatown.
The shopkeeper is reluctant to sell him the `mogwai' but sells it to him with the warning to
never expose him to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight. All of this happens and
the result is a gang of gremlins that decide to tear up the town on Christmas Eve. After
watching you can add to the debate, is this a Christmas movie?

The Lost Boys

DVD - 2004 | Special ed.

Teenage brothers Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) move with their mother (Dianne
Wiest) to a small town in northern California. While the younger Sam meets a pair of kindred
spirits in geeky comic-book nerds Edward (Corey Feldman) and Alan (Jamison Newlander), the
angst-ridden Michael soon falls for Star (Jami Gertz) -- who turns out to be in thrall to David
(Kiefer Sutherland), leader of a local gang of vampires. Sam and his new friends must save
Michael and Star from the undead.
Airplane!

DVD - 2005 | Don't call me Shirley ed.

This spoof comedy takes shots at the slew of disaster movies that were released in
the 70s. When the passengers and crew of a jet are incapacitated due to food
poisoning, a rogue pilot with a drinking problem must cooperate with his ex-
girlfriend turned stewardess to bring the plane to a safe landing.

The Neverending Story

DVD – 2009

On his way to school, Bastian (Barret Oliver) ducks into a bookstore to avoid bullies. Sneaking
away with a book called "The Neverending Story," Bastian begins reading it in the school attic.
The novel is about Fantasia, a fantasy land threatened by "The Nothing," a darkness that
destroys everything it touches. The kingdom needs the help of a human child to survive. When
Bastian reads a description of himself in the book, he begins to wonder if Fantasia is real and
needs him to survive.
The Outsiders

DVD – 2005

A teen gang in rural Oklahoma, the Greasers are perpetually at odds with the Socials, a rival
group. When Greasers Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell) and Johnny (Ralph Macchio) get into a
brawl that ends in the death of a Social member, the boys are forced to go into hiding. Soon
Ponyboy and Johnny, along with the intense Dallas (Matt Dillon) and their other Greaser
buddies, must contend with the consequences of their violent lives. While some Greasers try to
achieve redemption, others meet tragic ends.

The Breakfast Club

Five high school students from different walks of life endure a Saturday detention under a
power-hungry principal (Paul Gleason). The disparate group includes rebel John (Judd Nelson),
princess Claire (Molly Ringwald), outcast Allison (Ally Sheedy), brainy Brian (Anthony Michael
Hall) and Andrew (Emilio Estevez), the jock. Each has a chance to tell his or her story, making
the others see them a little differently -- and when the day ends, they question whether school
will ever be the same.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

DVD – 2006

Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) has an uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with
it. Intending to make one last duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, "borrows" a
Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day journey through the streets of Chicago. On Ferris' trail is high
school principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), determined to catch him in the act.

E.T -The Extra-terrestrial

DVD - 2017

After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy
named Elliott (Henry Thomas). Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott
introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and his little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and
the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill, resulting in government
intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.

Stand by Me

DVD - 2000

After learning that a stranger has been accidentally killed near their rural homes, four Oregon
boys decide to go see the body. On the way, Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton), Vern Tessio (Jerry
O'Connell), Chris Chambers (River Phoenix) and Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) encounter a
mean junk man and a marsh full of leeches, as they also learn more about one another and
their very different home lives. Just a lark at first, the boys' adventure evolves into a defining
event in their lives.

Weird Science

DVD – 2008

Teen misfits Gary (Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) design their ideal
woman on a computer, and a freak electrical accident brings her to life in the form of the
lovely, superhuman Lisa (Kelly LeBrock). She outfits Gary and Wyatt in cool clothes, surprises
them with a Porsche and helps them stand up to jerks Ian (Robert Downey Jr.) and Max (Robert
Rusler). But, all the while, the boys must hide Lisa's existence from Chet (Bill Paxton), Wyatt's
nightmare of a big brother.

Flashdance

DVD - 2017

Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals) is a beautiful young woman who works a day job in a steel mill and dances
in a bar at night. When Alex discovers that her handsome boss, Nick Hurley (Michael Nouri), is both
interested in her and supportive of her performing career, she renews her efforts to get accepted into a
prestigious dance conservatory. Although Alex is frightened of failure, she is cheered on by Nick, as well
as by her mentor, former ballet performer Hanna Long (Lilia Skala).

Big Trouble in Little China

DVD – 2002

Would you believe that this one has already been optioned for a reboot starring Dwayne “The Rock”
Johnson? Per ScreenRant.com, this cult clas sic will likely not be a traditional remake, but will
continue the story of the original film. Stay tuned to see if this reboot actually happens.
Highlander
DVD - 2016 | 30th anniversary edition.

Lionsgate Films has officially announced that a Highlander reboot is in the works. No other
details have been released, so feel free to use your imagination on this cult classic about an
immortal Scottish swordsman.

Splash
DVD - 2004 | 20th anniversary ed. widescreen.

According to Indie Wire and the Huffington Post, this movie has a planned gender-swapping
remake in the works. With maybe Channing Tatum in the lead role? Writing is still ongoing, so
it’s anyone’s guess as to whether this remake will actually happen.
