DISTRICT NARAIL
Narail is a district in south-western Bangladesh. It is a part of Khulna Division.

GEOGRAPHY

Narail District has an area of 990.23 square kilometres (382.33 sq mi). It is located


to the south of Magura District, north of Khulna District, with the Faridpur
District and Gopalganj District on the east, and Jessore District to the west.Its
average temperature ranges between 11.2C and 37.1C and has a yearly rainfall of
1467 mm. Through the district flow the Madhumati, Nabaganga, Bhairab,
and Chitra rivers. There are many beels and baors, the most noted of which is
Chachuri Beel.

CLIMATE

The Narail lies on 8m above sea level The climate is tropical in Narail. The
summers here have a good deal of rainfall, while the winters have very little. The
climate here is classified as Aw by the Koppen-Geiger system. The average annual
temperature in Narail is 25.8 °C | 78.5 °F. In a year, the rainfall is 1709 mm or 67.3
inch.

CROPS
There are some major crops that are cultivated in Narail district.These crops are
mainly kharif like,Transplanted Amon,Jute and Transplanted Aus .

In recent years, cultivation of Bananas in Bangladesh has created a great buzz


among farmers drawn by the lure of the higher profits it generates.
The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization ranks bananas as the world’s fourth-
most important crop after the major cereals.The country produces just under 1
million tonnes of bananas annually, last year it was 807,000 tonnes.Banana farmers
in Narail, who had a bumper crop this year, are also pocketing three-to-four times
the usual price during Ramadan.Narail farmers are happy with banana production
and price this year. Farmers are sending banana to the capital after fulfilling the
district demand, but here they are a little bit frustrated over problems they face in
transportation.
Cucumber cultivation is gaining popularity among the farmers of Narail sadar
upazila due to more profit at lower production cost.A great possibility of
cultivation of this medicinal vegetable has emerged due to suitable soil and
favourable weather conditions in the areas.A new farming of this Robi variety of
crop has opened in suitable fertile soil of Agdia, Bichali, Gobra, Musuri, Mulia,
Shaikhati and at least ten adjacent villages of sadar upazila.The farmers here are
busy in cultivating it widely in the regions.
Cash crop: Jute cultivation gained popularity in all three upazilas of the district
thanks to necessary support of the department of agricultural extension (DAE) to
farmers and fair price of the cash crop.

Spices: The main spices include turmeric, ginger ,chillies etc.

Vegetables : Cauliflower are cultivated most here. The saplings planted in Bhadra
are generally sold in Ashwin and Kartik, and those planted in Kartik are sold in
Poush. Similarly, the saplings planted in Poush are sold in Falgun.Various mixed
vegetables including sweet pumpkin are also occasionally planted in the
district.

SOIL
Soils of the area are grey and dark grey acidic heavy clays overlying peat or muck
at 25-100 cm. Soft peat and muck occupy perennially wet basin centres.
Soil type : General soil types include mainly Peat and Noncalcareous Dark Grey
Floodplain soils.
Land type : Medium high:13%

Low : 28%
Others : 18%

Organic matter : Organic matter content is medium to high.


Fertility status : Fertility level is medium.
Agroecological zone:Narail is a district under the agroecological zone(AEZ 14)
Gopalgonj –Khulna Beels.
