 It’s a process with an emphasis on standardised methods of working and creation of information, no
matter the project or the project team.
 It needs time to work
 It can be incredibly confusing; filled with new terms and acronyms
 It’s heavily reliant on people
 Technology is not the focus of BIM

 Have Project Team buy-in at the very beginning of the project, or at the point where the project
responsibilities are shifting
 Be very clear and concise with what is required
 If you haven’t received clear requirements, respond with clarity
 Hold the hands of those who do not fully understand it
 Do not speak in tongues

 Supply Chain requirement for knowledge will vary
 Be cognisant of this and adapt
 Consultant requirement for knowledge will vary
 Be realistic with what’s needed
 Be honest about your knowledge of the process
 Don’t be afraid to ask for help or explanation

What do I need to concentrate on?

 This entirely depends on where you are in the process
 First and foremost, understand the UK BIM Framework
 If you are a Client/Customer, focus on your OIRs and PIRs first, then project specific EIRs/AIRs
 If you are a Consultant, naming convention, CDE use, collaboration processes/workflows
 If you are a Contractor, naming convention, setting up workflows, setting up the CDE
 If you are Supply Chain, understand naming convention, understanding workflows, CDE use
