The document describes an ethical dilemma faced by an engineer recently hired by a company. In a meeting, the engineer's supervisor asks the unit to recommend one of two products to be used in a major project within two days, despite the engineer's preliminary evidence suggesting the other product may be better. The engineer feels uncomfortable recommending the preferred product of senior colleagues without more research, but is concerned about challenging them or delaying the project. The engineer must decide how to respond in line with engineering ethics.

PO8 Ethics (ESSE) – Apply professional ethics with islamic values and commit to responsibilities and norms of professional engineering code of ethics LO3 To demonstrate ethical principles in leadership, behavior and character with continuous self-development Questions: As a recent graduate of Engineering of IIUM, you have been employed in the R & D Engineering Division of MATEX, Inc. for the past several months. You were hired because of the promising research you did with a product while you were a student at Kulliyyah of Engineering. A meeting in your division is called by your supervisor, Jonathan. He announced that your unit must make a recommendation within the next two days on what product should be used by MATEX in processing a major product for the company. The overwhelming consensus of the engineers in your unit based on their many years of experience, is that product A is best for the job. But the research you have conducted at IIUM before, provides preliminary evidence that product B might be more reliable, more efficient, and considerably less costly. You have asked if the recommendation can be delayed for another month to see if firmer evidence can be found. Your recommendation is rejected due to the time constraints and Jonathan has asked you to write a report to recommend product A to the higher management without stopping you to do more research on product B. You have no desire to challenge your colleagues. Besides you don't necessarily disagree with them about which product is best. Still, you wish you had been given more time to work on product B, and you feel uncomfortable about leaving the preliminary data out of the report. Discuss the possible actions that you might take in-relation to ethics as an engineer.
