Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 60
PART-A is Compulsory
Answer ONE question from each unit of PART-B
Note: Assume any data suitably.
PART-A
10X2=20M
a) A two hinged parabolic arch of span 25m and rise 5m carries a udl of 40kN/m over the left half of
the span and a concentrated load of 100kN at the crown. Determine the horizontal thrust.
b) A cable of a suspension bridge of span 100m is hung from towers which are 10m and 5m
respectively above the lowest point of the cable. What is the ratio of the horizontal length of the
cable from the higher and lower towers to the lowest point of the cable.
c) Determine the Degree of Static indeterminacy for the structure shown in Fig 1.

d) Determine the moment induced in a fixed beam by unit translation without rotation at one end.
e) In a fixed beam AB of span ‘l’, one of the supports undergoes a rotation ‘ө’ then the shear in beam
is___
f) What is the sum of distribution factors of all the members meeting at a joint?
g) In the portal frame shown in Fig 2, if the storey height is taken as 6m, what is the sway
distribution factor for column 1-2.

5X8=40M
1. A two hinged parabolic arch of span 40m and rise 5m carries a udl of 5kN/m over the left half of the
span and a concentrated load of 40kN at the crown. Determine the horizontal thrust at the supports
and maximum positive and negative bending moments.

2. A Suspension cable is suspended from two piers A and B 200m apart, B being 5m below A the
cable carries UDL of 20kN/m and its lowest point is 10m below B. The ends of the cable are
attached to saddles on rollers at the top of the piers and backstays anchor cables. Backstays may be
assumed to be straight and inclined at 600 to vertical. Determine maximum tension in the cable,
tension in backstay and thrust on each pier.
