Gandhinagar, Friday, May 08, 2020 GNLU/Reg./04/OC/je/0520 Subject’ GNLU Contingent Examination Policy in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic for the Semester ending May/June 2020 (In compliance with the ‘UGC Guidelines on Examinations and Academic Calendar for the Universities in View of COVID-19 Pandemic and Subsequent Lockdown’, April 2020) ‘The spread of COVID-19 pandemic has created severe and numerous difficulties for the entire humanity and forced the governments across the globe to impose lockdowns in order to prevent the rapid spread of COVID-19 and to avoid a major health apocalypse. WHEREAS, it is needless to mention that the governments, its agencies and instrumentalities are taking enormous, appreciable and commendable efforts in containing the spread of the virus and it might appear that the stringent lockdown restrictions may be cased in the near future and traveling restrictions may be lifted, however it does not seem that the social distancing norms may be eased any sooner. AND WHEREAS, being 1 National Law University with very rich student diversity wherein most of the students of the University come from different parts of the country, from urban and rural areas, and from different economic and social background, it will not be safe for the students and staff to be called back to the campus for conduct of the End-Semester Examination and give presentations and viva voce, even if the travel restrictions are lifted. Moreover, being a 100% residential university, this may pose practical challenges to enforce the social distancing norms during the conduct of examinations; AND WHEREAS, the University had proactively taken various measures to prevent any academic loss to the students by making them available digital library at their home and utilised sufficient technological means to ensure that the teachers deliver lectures to their students in a virtual classroom as per the regular timetable. Further, the Department of Alumni Relations and faculty members are also organising guest lectures by the practitioners and eminent experts on. different subjects; AND WHEREAS, during the continuing uncertainty due to rapid spread of COVID 19, in the larger interests of the students, the University is firm and determined towards the timely completion of Graduate Degree/Post-Graduate Degree programmes so that the ambitions and career prospects of the students do not get affected /deferred by this unforeseen exigency created by the COVID 19 pandemic; AND WHEREAS, the UGC Guidelines on Examination and Academic Calendar for the Universities in view of COVID-19 Pandemic and subsequent Lockdown prepared by an expert committee appointed by the University Grants Commission vide notification no. F.1-1/2020 inafter referred as the Report) has provided multiple suggestions whercin the Universities BALLER ar eo UC Le eee} eer a ee ee Or Ca On have been conferred with the discretion to choose the best out of various options to complete the assessment/evaluation of the students. NOW THEREFORE, after making comprehensive assessment of all such factors and after a series of meetings with the faculty members and at different Committees, the University hereby adopts this Contingent Examination Policy for Post-Graduate (LL.M & MBA) and Under-Graduate Degree Programmes for the semester ending May/June 2020. iy ATTENDANCE, CONTINUOUS EVALUATION AND END SEMESTER EXAMINATION (LL.M & MBA): 1. Last Teaching Day: ‘The last teaching day for the PG Programme shall be 15.05.2020. 1.2, Attendance: ‘All the students shall be deemed to have attended the classes from the date of ‘commencement of lockdown till last teaching day. 1.3, Continuous Evaluation: ‘The requirements for the continuous evaluation shall remain unaltered and it shall be completed within the deadline as prescribed by the faculty members in their respective subjects 1.4, End-Semester Examination: Based on the recommendations contained in the Report, considering the mental, social, economic, technical and health challenges faced by the students and their family members during the prevailing difficult situations created by the pandemic, for the purpose of end semester examination, the performance of the student for each subject taught in the current semester shall be evaluated based on their performance in the previous semester of aggregate of all the previous semesters. The average marks so obtained for the previous semester or aggregate of all the previous semesters whichever is higher shall be taken in to account for computing the end semester marks for this semester, 1.4.1, Ilustration-1: X, a student of LL.M has secured 70% marks in the aggregate in the Semester-I as per the results published by the University. ‘The aggregate marks scored (70 %) by X shall be scaled down to 50 in licu of End-Semester Examination for the purpose of calculation and accordingly his score will be 35. During the Semester-II, X has secured 30 marks out of 50 (maximum marks) in the continuous evaluation in the Subject-Z. Now, for the Semester-II, X’s marks will be calculated for subject Z, as follows:- ‘Nature of Assessment Max Marks | Marks Secured by | student =X in| Semester-IT for Subject-Z Continuous Evaluation Marks for subject Z 50. 30 Page 2 of 7 End Semester Examination 50 35% Total ~_| 100 65 *X has secured aggregate 70 % in the Semester-I, which is scaled down to 50 for the purpose of the calculation, Therefore, 35 Marks shall be awarded to each subject taught in Semester-II. 1.4.2, Illustration- X, a student of MBA has secured 80% marks in the aggregate in the Semester-III and scored 74% in the overall aggregate of all the previous semesters (Sem-I to Sem-II]) as per the results published by the University. The aggregate marks scored (80 %) by X shall be scaled down to 60 in lieu of End-Semester Examination for the purpose of calculation and accordingly his score will be 48. During the Semester-IV, X has secured 30 matks out of 40 (maximum marks) in the continuous evaluation in the Subject-Z.. Now, for the Semester-IV, X's marks will be calculated for subject Z, as follows ‘Nature of Assessment Max Marks | Marks Secured by | X in Semester-II for Subject-Z, Continuous Evaluation Marks for subject Z | 40 30 End Semester Examination 60 48% Total 100 78 *X has secured aggregate 80 % in the Semester-IIT, which is scaled down to 60 for the purpose of the calculation, Therefore, 48 Marks shall be awarded to each subject taught in Semester-IV 1.5. Dissertation (LL.M & MBA): 1.5.1. The requirements for evaluation of the dissertation shall remain unaltered and the last date for submission of dissertation is 15.06.2020, 1.5.2. The students shall complete the plagiarism check on or before 08.06.2020, All the students of LLM & MBA shall submit the dissertation by email to pedepartment@gnluac.in and mbapgcouncil@gnlu.ac.in respectively. A copy of the dissertation shall be sent to the respective Supervisor in PDF format strictly in accordance with guidelines prescribed by the Centre for Post-graduate Legal Studies (CPGLS) and MBA PG Council (MBAPGC) as the case may be. 1.5.3. Viva voce examination shall be conducted by the faculty supervisor along with an external expert through WebEx on the date and time to be notified by the CPGLS and MBAPGC. 1.6. Exemption from Certain Requirements: The training and research requirements as mentioned below are exempted from compliance in view of the disruptions occurred in the prevailing ciscumstances:- 1.6.1. Observation/Leaming of Teaching Practices through Faculty-members 1.6.2, Research Publication Page 3 of 7 1.6.3. Conference Participation 1.6.4. Mid-term Report to Faculty-members 1.7 Date of Publication of the Results: ‘The tentative date of publication of the results for the Post Graduate Degree Programs shall be June 30, 2020. 2. CONTINUOUS EVALUATION AND END SEMESTER EXAMINATION: (UNDER GRADUATE PROGRAMMES) 2.1, Last Teaching Day: ‘The last teaching day for the UG Programme shall be 15.05.2020 2.2. Attendance: All the students shall be deemed to have attended the classes from the date of commencement of lockdown to till last teaching day. 2.3. Mid Semester Examination & Continuous Evaluation: ‘The Mid Semester Examinations have been conducted as per the schedule in compliance with the academic calendar published by the University for the even semester. The requirements for the other components of continuous evaluation shall remain unaltered and it shall be completed within the timeline prescribed by the faculty members in their respective courses. 2.4. End-Semester Examinatios Considering the mental, social, economic, technical and health challenges faced by the students and their family members during the prevailing difficult situations created by the pandemic, in liew of end semester examination, the performance of the student for each subject taught in the current semester shall be evaluated based on their performance in the previous semester or aggregate of all the previous semesters, The average marks so obtained for the previous semester or aggregate of all the previous semesters whichever is higher shall be taken in to account for computing the end semester marks for this semester. 2.4.1, Illustration: A, a student of Semester-X has secured 70% marks in the aggregate in the Semester-IX as per the results published by the University and scored 68% in the overall aggregate of all the previous semesters (Sem-I to Sem-IX). And whichever is higher shall be considered for the purpose of calculation ie., 70%. The aggregate marks scored (70 %) by X shall be scaled down to 50 in lieu of End-Semester Examination for the purpose of calculation and accordingly his score will be 35. During the Semester-X, If A has secured 30 marks out of 50 (maximum marks) in the continuous evaluation in the Subject Z. Illustration-2: A, a student of Semester-VI has secured 70% marks in the aggregate in the Semester-V as per the results published by the University and scored 68% in the overall aggregate of all the previous semesters (Sem-I to Sem-V). And whichever is higher shall be considered for the purpose of calculation ie., 70%. The aggregate marks scored (70 %) by A shall be scaled down to 50 in liew of End-Semester Examination for the purpose of calculation and accordingly his score will be 35. During the Semester-VI, If A has secured 30 marks ‘out of 50 (maximum marks) in the continuous evaluation in the Subject Z. Therefore, 35 marks will be awarded to each subject taught in Semester-VI. 2.5, End Semester Examination of Practical Paper for B.Sc. LL.B (Hons.) Degree Programme: In lieu of practical paper, the students shall submit a project as per the guidelines stipulated by the Science and ‘Technology faculty. 2.6, Seminar Paper: 2.6.1. The requirements for evaluation of the Seminar paper shall remain unaltered. 2.6.2. The last date for submission of Seminar Paper-III & IV will be 19.05.2020 and 24.05.2020, respectively. 2.6.3, All the students are required to submit the Seminar dissertation by email to the concerned faculty members in PDF format strictly in accordance with guidelines prescribed by the Academic Curriculum Committee (ACC) 2.6.4. ‘The viva voce examination shall be conducted by the faculty supervisor through WebEx on 25.05.2020 and 29.05.2020 for Seminar Paper-III & IV respectively. The Examination Section shall circulate the schedule in due course of time. 2.7. Carty forward Rule: The GNLU Examination rules pertaining to the clearing minimum papers requirement for promotion to the next academic year including detention scheme shall not be applicable/implemented for this semester in view of the recommendations the UGC. The students are allowed to carry forward the backlog of papers and shall be promoted to the next academic year. However, they have to clear the backlog papers, whenever the subject is offered. 2.8 Date of Publication of the Results: ‘The tentative date of publication of the results for the Under Graduate Degree Programs shall be June 15, 2020. 3. Opportunity to Improve the Grades In the unlikely event of the above policy causing any prejudice to any student, he/she will be allowed to improve their grades by offering one additional opportunity to appear for the cuttent semester course(s) in succeeding semesters through supplementary examinations. 4. Establishment of Cell for handling Student Grievances related to Examinations and Academic activities during COVID 19 Pandemic: 5.1.
