Use these terms and definitions below to understand concepts taught in the course.

Term Definition

continuous team Also known as Kaizen, or Lean. A team evaluation method where the goal is to
improvement steadily increase the effectiveness of the team or organization over time by
optimizing the processes that work and changing or eliminating the processes
that don't work.

cross-functional Teams where group members have varied experience and backgrounds which
teams work together effectively towards a common goal.

forming The first phase of Bruce Tuckman’s team-development framework. Forming


involves when the members of team first meet, interact, and build the
foundations for their working relationship.

mission statement A document that clearly and concisely communicates the purpose of a team’s
existence.

natural teams Also known as workgroups. Natural teams typically focus on a common,
ongoing product, process, or service. Examples: a customer service
department, or the wait staff of a fine-dining restaurant.

norming The third phase of Bruce Tuckman’s team-development framework. During this
phase the team members begin to act like a team and establish a collective
identify.

performing The fourth and final phase of Bruce Tuckman’s team-development framework.
A team that successfully reaches this stage typically exhibits team harmony,
high productivity, an ability to manage team conflict, adaptability, and
successful development of both individuals and the collective team.

personality A tool used to assess your traits and communication style. This tool can be
assessment tool helpful in selecting the right leadership style for you. Popular personality
assessment tools include DiSC, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and
StrengthFinder.

Plus/Delta A simple team assessment model that breaks analysis into two categories – the
assessment Plus items being processes and technique that worked, and the Deltas being
technique things that could be changed and made better in the future.

self-directed teams Teams that require little or no supervision.

SMART A mnemonic to help with setting effective objectives. SMART objectives need to
be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

storming The second phase of Bruce Tuckman’s team-development framework. During


this phase team members explore the ways in which they conflict and work
through smoothing out these differences productively.

SWOT analysis A self-analysis approach that helps you clarify your Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities, and Threats.

virtual teams Teams with members in differing locations, often with significant cultural and
language differences.
