IV. WRITING (30 points)

Write an essay on the suggested topic using topical vocabulary. Write your
answer in at least 250-300 words.

Topic: Some movies are serious, designed to make the audience think. Other
movies are designed primarily to amuse and entertain. Which type of movie do you
prefer?
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
The problem of what type of movies is better is really ubiquitous nowadays. It
is a nice topic to speak about in terms of the surge of popularity of movies during this
year when one of the main people’s activity is watching films. So what type of
movies would I prefer?
Firstly, the thing we need to take into account when choosing something to
watch is actually our mood. To my mind, it is of great importance because when we
are in a bad mood, which could be caused by difficulties at work or in family, we
tend to select something that is able to amuse us. Also when we are tired or just do
not have a desire to think a lot, a good comedy or some soap opera can be quite
suitable for us. Our main goal is to obtain pleasure and positive emotions. What is
more, most people can always watch only such types of movies, because they are
simply accustomed to it and do not want to force themselves to switch to others. Of
course, it is clear that when we want to watch something of high style that can
provoke thoughts and actually make us think, we just in a mood for it, even if we do
not notice it. It is even possible that our own brains can decide for us.
Secondly, there are different types of audience and filmmakers produce their
movies and series orienting to some group of people. Nevertheless, there is a lot of
film production that can be interesting for everyone, but as for me, I can decide who a
film was made for, basing on the plot and problems that are raised. If it is a serious
movie that makes us resort to our deep feelings and think of things that are too far
from our understanding, it is obvious that the target audience is not children or people
who have poor education. Therefore, it is possible to say that movies that are
originally made for amusement can be suitable for everyone, but there are a lot of
examples that confirm that it is too easy or even too stupid for people, who spend
their time watching movies full of sense.
To sum up, taking into consideration the information above, I would choose
diverse types of movies for different moods. When I feel low, depressed, or tired, I
would certainly select a movie that will give me positive emotions and where I can
laugh. When everything with my mood is good, I can choose films to think
everything over. Consequently, it means that I can watch everything that can
interesting to me, but my mood and preferences are the most important factor when it
comes to watching series or movies.
