Answer for the sir:

Sir I am doing my fea analysis on tracker trailer and on trector trailer I am going to do analysis on
knuckle joint and in that knuckle joint. Our critical component is knuckle pin.

Define Problem:

As we know that tractor trailer is used to transfer or move goods or material from one
place to another so to connect the tractor to the trailer we need knuckle joint.

Critical component:

Before going to select our critical component first we have to know about what is
critical component.
critical components are the components where the maximum forces or stresses are generated and where
the chance of the failure is maximum. critical component can be one or more than one in every design.
Now the question here is, why do we need to find the critical component in our design? Answer: As we
know that at critical component stress or forces are maximum so we must have to design our critical
component as efficient that it can bear all kind of maximum stresses or load or forces. so due to this
reason we must have to identify critical components in our design.

Critical component in our design:

As we know that we are doing FE analysis on tractor trailer and in

tractor trailer we are doing FE analysis on knuckle joint so, in our design knuckle pin in our design is the
critical component because at that component the forces or stresses is maximum.

Assumption:

The following assumption are made when doing finate element analysis on our model.
1) Our material properties are correct.
2) Force required to pull the trailer is 50kN
3) maximum force the trailer bear and can pull the load is 300kN

Pre-Processing:

Pre-Processing has four (4) different sub-steps.

a) Creation of model.
b) Define material properties.
c) Generation of Mesh.
d) Boundary condition

A) Creation of Model:

Before doing analysis we must have to make or design the 3-D model of our
part on which we want to do Finete Element Analysis. So we have make the 3-D model of all the
parts and than assemble it In solidworks. After that we have open our model in Ansys software in
the geometry.

B) Define Material Properties:

This is the step where we have to define our material properties like
what kind of material we are selecting, what will be its density, what will be its tensile yield strength
and compressive yield strength.

As in this project we are doing Analysis three(3) different materials. So our first material on which
we are doing analysis is “Gray Cast Iron” and from Ansys software its density is 7200Kg/m 3 and its
Tensile ultimate strength is 2.4 x 108 Pa, and its compressive ultimate strength is 8.2 x 10 8Pa.

C) Generation of Mesh:

This is the step where we have to generate the mesh so for that we have
use the Ansys software and from that software the shape of the mesh is tri-angle and number of
nodes was 8238 and number of elements was 3622.

D) Boundary Condition:
This is the step where we have to apply the Boundary condition so we have
apply the fixed support from the “fork end” and force is applied at the “Eye end”

Processing:

After modeling and selection of the material and than generating mesh and applying
boundary condition on our model we than have to find the solution of our results and we did this by
Ansys software. We did analysis of Equivalent stress and total deformation. Except that we have first
applied force of 50kN and than 300KN.
Post-Processing:

This is the step where we have to analysu

How much force is required to pull the trailer:

Now here we have to think about two perspectives.

1) Forces applied without the load is applied or there is no load in the trailer:
2) How much maximum force the trailer bear and can pull the load.
