Newton's Laws of Motion Explained

The document recaps Newton's first and second laws of motion and introduces the third law. It defines action and reaction forces and provides examples like walking, hitting a ball with a bat, and pushing against a wall. It explains that action and reaction forces do not result in equilibrium and provides experimental verification using spring balances. Applications of the third law are discussed, like rowing a boat, tying a boat before disembarking, gun recoil, and an air-filled balloon moving forward on release. An assignment with questions on specific examples like a bowling ball hitting pins, a bouncing ball, rocket motion, gun recoil, and a horse cart is also included with email IDs for teachers.

ASSIGNMENT 7

1. When a bowling bowl strikes a pin, which imparts greater force

upon the other? Which experiences a greater acceleration?

2. Consider the instance of a ball bouncing on ground. Identify the

action and reaction forces.
3. Explain the motion of the rocket in terms of the Newton’s third
law of motion.

4. In the case of recoil of a gun why recoil velocity of the gun is less
than that of the bullet, though force exerted by the bullet is equal
and opposite to that exerted by the gun on bullet?

5. How does a horse cart move forward, though the force with which
the horse pulls the cart is equal and opposite to the force with
which the cart pulls the horse?

6. When do action and reaction balance each other, if at all?

7. A man of mass 100kg applies a force of 100 N on another man of

mass 50 kg. By what magnitude of reaction force does the second
man apply on the first?
