Chapter – Matter in our surroundings

1. The matter around us exists mainly in three states- solid,

liquid and gas.
2. Properties of these three states of matter can be compared
as:
Property Solid Liquid Gas
Definite shape Yes No No
and size
Fixed volume Yes Yes No
Inter particle Maximum Intermediate Minimum
force of
attraction
Inter particle Minimum Intermediate Maximum
space
Compressibility Nil Very low Very high
Kinetic energy Lowest Intermediate Highest

3. The rate of diffusion of liquid is higher than that of solids.

4. The property of high compressibility of gas is used in LPG
and CNG cylinder.
5. The particles of gas moves about randomly at high speed
and hit each other and the walls of the container.
6. The pressure of a gas is the force exerted by the gas on
the walls of its container.
Answer the following questions
1. Why cannot a gas cylinder be half filled?
2. Write the full forms of
a) LPG b) CNG
3. Which state of matter is rigid? Why?
4. Define the terms:
a) Fluidity b) Compressibility
5. How do aquatic plants and animals survive?
