The manager of your department would like


to improve the ways in which the department trains new staff. Write a report for your
manager in which you comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the current
training programme and suggest how it could be improved.

Introduction

This report aims to evaluate the staff team building day run on 29 May for 15
members of the IT department of Microsoft Corporation, in order to improve the work
environment to strengthen performance.

Description

The team-building activity took place at a local training centre during working hours. It
was organized in partnership with Cerbelli Creative, an organisation specialising in
developing confidence in public speaking. Although members of the IT department
were already familiar with each other after being together for three weeks, they were
asked to participate in various mainly game-based tasks. The training ended with
each giving a presentation to the group.

Evaluation

Having a small group was a definitive advantage. The organisers changed the
participants around, hence including everyone in engaging activities. Moreover, this
was an enjoyable opportunity for forging closer working relationships with colleagues.
One weakness of the training was the venue. The premises was quite crowded and
did not provide enough space. It is worth mentioning that unfortunately, 6 members
could not attend, as this led to a certain amount of division within the team.

Recommendations

Microsoft Corporation could benefit from this team building day. However,
participating only half of the IT department team led to a division, rather than
unification. Our recommendation, therefore, is that all departments would be able to
attend a team-building activity in future.
