Assignment 2 / 1

Assignment 2
You should attempt this assignment after studying Module 3

With all assignments from now on, please state clearly the title of the publication you are
sending your work to (which may be different for each question you answer). Giving your
tutor this information enables them to comment on the suitability of your work for that
market, or they may be able to offer alternative markets, which might be more suitable.
Please remember to ensure your work is of the right length for your proposed markets.

1. Study three magazines, or newspapers, which have readers’ letter pages. Try to find
publications that offer attractive prizes, or pay for each letter published, or the Star Letter, if
you can. We’d like you to select three different publications and if you can, pick at least
one new publication you’ve not looked at before. Write a reader’s letter in the right style for
each of these three different markets, and state which letter you will be sending to which
magazine.

2. Choose a publication that publishes fillers. (This can be one of the three publications
you’ve used for your letters in question 1, or it can be a completely different publication.)
Either write one long filler (maximum 500 words) for one of your target publication, or two
short fillers (maximum 250 each). For example, if you find a filler slot in one of your target
publications that requires pieces of 300 words, then write one piece for this slot. Or, if the
filler slots you identify only use pieces of up to 100 words, then try writing two different
fillers for this target publication.

Your tutor needs to see:

• Three reader’s letters that you’ve written for three different magazines.
• Either one long filler (500 words) or two shorter fillers (up to 250 words each) for a
filler slot that you’ve identified.

Remember to put your work aside for a day or two and then edit it before sending it to your
tutor.

Whilst you’re waiting for your tutor to mark and return your work, continue looking for new
markets and have a go at writing letters and fillers for some of these markets too.
