Context.

*Intellectual property rights are the rights given to persons over the creation of
their minds. They usually give the creator an exclusive right over the use o0f
his/her creation for a certain period of time.

Intellectual property rights are customarily divided into two main areas

- Copyright and rights related to copyright.

The rights of authors of literary and artistic works (such us books and other
writings, musical compositions, paintings, sculpture, computer programs and
films) are protected by copyright, for a minimum period of 50 years after the death
of the author and also protected through copyright related rights are the rights of
performers, producers of phonograms and broadcasting organizations. The main
social purpose of protection of copyright and related rights is to encourage and
reward creative work.

- Industrial property

Industrial property can usefully be divided into two main areas. one area can be
characterized as the protection of distinctive signs, in particular trademarks and

intellectual property rights in Ethiopia. The country is also member of the world
intellectual property organization. One aspect of protection intellectual property
right is patent. Patent is intended to protect originality and creativity of a person or
a company. Patent title is granted to inventions. Minor inventions and industrial

Qun 2.What is the importance of small business for economic development

(consider developing countries like Ethiopia)

* small scale entrepreneurship has emerged as a powerful tool in providing

relatively large employment base for given unit of investment, equitable wealth
distribution and removal of regional economic disparities. Many towns in are
growing fast.

Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) are a special focus of the government, given
that they comprise the largest share of total enterprises and employment in the non
agricultural sub-sectors.in recognition of the important role MSEs have to play in
creating income and employment opportunities and reducing poverty, the
government drafted its first micro and small enterprise development strategy in
1997. The overall objective of the 1997 MSE strategy was to create an enabling
environment for MSEs, with specific objectives to facilitate economic growth;
bring equitable development; create long term jobs; strengthen cooperation
between MSEs; provide the basis for medium and large-scale enterprises; promote
export; balance preferential treatment between MSEs and bigger enterprises.

Small enterprises are major players in the economic resurgence. They are
instrument of change and vehicles of growth and diversification. The industrial
sector is contributing its share to the expansion of employment, export and
entrepreneurship
Qun 3.select one entrepreneur businesses found in Ethiopia and study the
succession Journey.

*serial entrepreneur Addis Alemayehou

Partner, managing partner, board member, senior advisor… the list of positions
Addis Alemayehou holds concurrently is impressive. many of these roles are at his
own companies, which include one of Ethiopia’s biggest advertising agencies, a
popular television channel and a telecommunication start-up in south Africa. Yet
Addis comes across as pretty calm and collected. He admits that on the inside,
though, the pressure often gets to him.

-launching Ethiopia’s first English radio station

While working with USAID, Addis frequently travelled to Nairobi where he still
had many contacts because he grew up there. During one such trip he asked his
friend, chris kirubi- a well-known Kenyan businessman with interests in property,
insurance, media and manufacturing- which one of his investments he enjoys the
most. Capital FM, replied kirubi, his radio station.

-helping multinationals market themselves

Having already had some experience with the advertising industry through the
radio station, Addis saw potential in catering for the marketing and communication
needs of these companies. Therefore, in 2011, he launched the advertising,
branding and public relations agency 251 communications.

-swapping radio for TV

Addis sold his stake in Afro FM right after starting 251 communications but kept
exploring possibilities in broadcasting. Initially he wanted to launch MTV
Ethiopia’s but after a meeting with MTV, they declined.MTV did not believe the
channel would generate enough advertising revenue to cover the licensing cost and
operational expenses. The MTV representative told him, if I were you, I would
start my own channel.

-partnering for success

Addis has built most of his ventures by identifying a gap in the market and then
partnering with companies that have the necessary technical expertise. And in a
few instances, he has simply copied and pasted successful international business
model.
