Dear Friends,
It is a great pleasure to welcome all those attending the Sixth Annual New York Musical
Theatre Festival. From the bright lights of Broadway to the do-it-yourself innovation of
off-off Broadway, New York City is the theater capital of the world. That’s why we’re
so thrilled to once again host this exciting event, which brings the energy, talent, and
pizzazz of New York’s musical theatre community to Manhattan’s West Side for a month
of outstanding theater.
Since it was established five years ago, the New York Musical Theatre Festival has
entertained and inspired audiences throughout the five boroughs with its creative and
innovative performances. The festival has showcased 176 musicals – more than 50 of
which have since been produced in other venues, including on Broadway. And with thirty
new shows scheduled to premiere this year, the sixth season looks to be one of NYMF’s
best yet. Featuring a range of musical genres – from rock and hip-hop to fusion and
country – the festival will not only appeal to a diverse group of residents, but also capture
the unparalleled variety of viewpoints that give our City its incredible strength.
The New York Musical Theatre Festival has done outstanding work opening up opportunities
for emerging and veteran artists while producing quality musical theatre that’s accessible

Welcome to the Sixth Annual

New York Musical Theatre Festival!
NYMF was created to showcase a new generation of musicals and musical theatre artists,
to ensure that America’s greatest art form remains vibrant, entertaining, and compelling.
Tackling that ambitious mission is only possible because so many people share these goals.
From day one, the not-so-secret strength of the Festival has been the amazing network
of supportive professionals (everyone from directors, dramaturgs, and performers to producers,
designers, technical providers, and hundreds of other theatre-loving volunteers), who
donate their time, talent and energy to make sure the shows will go on – diving in with
a Mickey-Rooney-and-Judy-Garland “let’s put on a show” sensibility.
That 30 new musicals make it to the stage each Festival is a testament to this generous
community. I owe a particular debt of gratitude to the NYMF staff and board who worked
tirelessly (and sometimes sleeplessly) this past year to ensure that, amid a challenging
economy, NYMF could provide more support than ever to participating artists, and pull

Andy Warhol Was Right is the 2009 Born At NYMF commission. Born At NYMF aims to bridge the
gap between the worlds of theater and dance, to encourage cross-disciplinary exploration and innovation,

2006, the program has commissioned and developed one new dance musical each year, producing

Argentina Passionate! is a sensual and passionate musical spectacle embodied in
a multimedia performance-art piece interpreting Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Gardel,
and other Argentinean legends, featuring Andy Chmelko, Jennifer Loryn, and
La Banda Argentina. It reflects the Argentine idiosyncrasy through its culture,
music, dance, and zest for life. Through a series of tableaux and connected musical vignettes, the audience
will discover and explore an Argentina beyond Tango.

Jim Caruso’s Cast Party

Jim Caruso’s Cast Party, the wildly popular weekly soiree, brings a sprinkling of Broadway
glitz and glamour to the legendary Birdland in New York City. Every Monday night showbiz
superstars hit the stage alongside up-and-comers, creating an impromptu variety show
with jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle. The buoyant, sharp, and charming
Caruso guides the entire affair, and the audience is invited to participate in the musical
fun. It’s the party that would happen if somehow David Letterman and Ed Sullivan threw a hip house party
around a nine-foot concert grand piano. CBS-TV called it “Extreme Open Mic!” For more information, go to

Musicals on Television
As part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival, The Paley Center for
Media will screen a sampler of musicals written exclusively for television
including The Bachelor (1956), starring Hal March, Jayne Mansfield,
Julie Wilson, and Carol Haney, with music and lyrics by Steve Allen (plus
additional songs by Ervin Drake); Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates
(1958), starring Tab Hunter and Peggy King, with music and lyrics by Hugh
Martin; and Alice Through the Looking Glass (1966), with an all-star cast including Jimmy Durante, Nanette
Fabray, and Agnes Moorehead, and music by Moose Charlap and lyrics by Elsie Simmons. In addition, the
Paley Center will also screen the 1967 television adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel, starring
Robert Goulet and Mary Grover.
