1. Overview

Surge -type fault locater system consists of Surge Recorders (SFL-2000) installed in the terminals of transmission
line and a Fault Locator Server (F/L Server) which performs fault locating calculation. You are able to confirm fault
location results by connecting Web browser from client (Client PC).
Surge Recorder (SFL-2000) performs monitoring and recording with 10 MHz fast data sampling synchronized with
internal GPS clock.
When a fault occurs on a transmission line, SFL-2000 detects it and records the data.
When F/L Server requires surge data by polling, SFL-2000 transmits them to F/L Server. F/L Server locates the fault
point by them. (It locates by the difference in the time that the surge arrived at each substation on the transmission line.)
You can input the parameters which are necessary for Surge type fault locator system to locate a fault point to F/L
Server from Client PC. The parameters which consist of propagation velocity of surge, the line length are saved on the
F/L server. The permission to parameter setting operations is determined by type of user.
The surge data is stored in F/L Server. Therefore you can redo fault locating as many times as you want after
modifying the parameters from Client PC.

1.2. System features

(1) Reliable fault detection
Activated only when fault occurs.
(2) Highly accurate location
Time synchronization accuracy is ±160n sec.
Can detect the rising edge of the surge even when the surge is dull.

FF05239-002 1
2. Locating specifications
2.1. Locating expression
The following expression measures the time difference in the surge arrival time at the both edges.
* The distance between substations and the propagation velocity of surge are registered to the software.

First, Surge type fault locator system computes the surge arrival time from the rising edge point of the surge wave
recorded at the substation. Next, the system locates a fault-point using the surge arrival time and the following
expression.
L t
X v
2 2
X : The locating value (the distance from the A substation to the fault-point) (m)
L : The line length (the distance from the A substation to the B substation) (m)
Δt : The difference in the time which the surge arrived at (tA-tB) (sec)
tA = The time that the surge arrived at the A substation
tB = The time that the surge arrived at the B substation
v : The propagation velocity of surge (m/sec)

2.2. Target locating accuracy

Target accuracy of the fault location is within ±200m

2.2.1. Source of error

Source of error Accuracy Error
a. Accuracy in synchronization with GPS Within 160n sec Between both edges, 320n sec max =
about 95 m*
b. The delay in detecting the rising edge About 3 samples 1 sample = 100n sec,
of the surge 3 samples = about 89m*
* This is the value when the propagation velocity of surge is 297m/μsec.
Supplement:
When there is a difference between the line length (L) which is set to F/L Server and the actual, it shall be
added to the error.
When there is a difference between the propagation velocity of surge, which is set to F/L Server, and the
actual, it shall be added to the error.

2.2.2. The way of calculation with the propagation velocity of surge (tentative)
Surge type fault locator system measures the arrival time of the surge generated when the circuit breaker is closed, at
the both edges of the transmission line.
Then it computes the propagation velocity of surge from that arrival time.

5. Surge Recorder (SFL-2000) specifications
5.1. Equipment overview
Surge Recorder SFL-2000, which sampling timing is synchronized by GPS clock, monitors and records the fault
voltage and current surge of the transmission line.

5.2. Features

frequency(Low-speed) Sampling frequency(Low-speed): 12.8kHz
The number of the input It is possible to store in maximum 12 circuits.
circuit
Trigger detection function There are two types of trigger detection.
One is Current Surge Detect , the other is RMS Level Detect
[Current Surge Detect]
High speed sampling data (10MHz) is recorded as Surge data.
Trigger is detected when current surge is generated.

[RMS Level Detect]

Low speed sampling data (12.8kHz) is recorded as DFR data.
Trigger is detected when voltage RMS value becomes under threshold level.

[If you enable two types of triggers.]

SFL-2000 inputs voltage with low speed sampling (12.8kHz), calculates voltage
RMS under commercial frequency, detects transmission line faults surely, starts
the surge recording acquired by high speed sampling.
Record memory Records the surge waveform data in 4ms before and after trigger detection
respectively.
In case of the fault occurs consecutively, it can record up to 8 surge data.
