We all know that Santa has an army of little helpers.

Dressed in cheerful costumes they help Santa with all the

presents. We also know that it is very cold at the North Pole, so warm socks are more than welcome. And with a
beautiful curling toe these socks exactly fit in their curly toe shoes.

These socks have a double cuff with points, cheerful stripes, a Jojo-heel, a funny curly toe and... jingle bells!!
The heel and the toe are knitted with ‘German short rows’.
I like to knit the stocking stitch on a slightly thinner needle because I think it makes the stitches more refined.
(see tension) Use Jogless stripes for a better transition between the stripes.
The described sock is a size 40/41 (6./7) [8.5/9.5] but are easy adjustable for any other size. (see table basic
measurements for socks)

Jojo-heel
For the Jojo-heel you knit in short rows. I used ‘German short rows’ for these socks. With this technique you’ll get
‘double’ stitches which you’ll knit as 1 st. later on.
(This is just 1 method to knit short row, there are more methods.)
Jojo-heel with German short rows.
In this example the heel is knitted over half the amount of stitches of the sock = 32 st.
De stitches are divided over 4 needles = 16 st. per needle.
Knit the heel over needle 1 and 4, leave other st. to rest on needle 2 and 3.
Divide st. on needle 1 and 4 in three, (see table), place markers if you like.
For example; for size 40/41 (6/7) [8.5/9.5] = 32 st. divided in 3 = 10/12/10.
The heel is knitted in 2 parts. Between the 2 parts you knit 2 rows across all stitches!
After knitting the first part of the heel there are 10 double st. + 6 normal st. on needle 1, and 6 normal st. + 10
double st. on needle 4.

The double stitch; slip the st. purl wise with the yarn in front. Bring yarn over the needle to the back, making the
slipped st. a double stitch.

First part of the heel

You’ve just finished a rnd. in white with needle 4. Knit on with red and knit 1 rnd. across all st.
At the first part of the heel all double st. stay on the needle till all double st. are made.
Nld 1; (RS) Knit all st. of needle 1, turn work.
th
(WS) Slip 1 st. purl wise with yarn in front, bring yarn over the needle to the back, (= the double st.),
pull yarn tight. Bring yarn under the needle to front an purl rest of the st. of needle 1.
Nld 4; (WS) Purl all st. of needle 4, turn work.
th
(RS) Slip 1 st. purl wise with yarn in front, bring yarn over the needle to the back, (= the double st.),
pull yarn tight. Knit rest of the st. of needle 4.
* Nld 1; (RS) Knit till the double st. (leave double st. on left needle) and turn work.
(WS) Make a double st. and purl rest of the st.
Nld 4; (WS) Purl till double st. (leave double st. on left needle) and turn work.
(RS) Make a double st. and knit rest of the st.*
Repeat from * till * till there are 10 double st. and 6 normal st. on needle 1, and 6 normal st. and 10 double st. on
needle 4. (= 10/12/10)
Knit 2 rnd. across all st. thereby knitting all double st. as 1K in first rnd. You now have 64 normal st. on the
needles, 16 st. on each needle.
Pull yarn tight in first rnd. between needle 1 and 2 and between needle 3 and 4 to prevent wholes.

Second part of the heel

In the second part of the heel the newly made double st. are knitted directly in the next rnd. Stick to the chosen
diversion conform the table. (in this example 10/12/10)
Start again in the middle of the heel, between needle 1 and 4.
Nld 1; (RS) Knit the (6) normal st. + 1 (= K7 st.). Leave the remaining (9) st. and turn work.
(WS) Make a double st. and purl rest of the st.
Nld 4; (WS) Purl the (6) normal st. + 1 (= P7 st.). Leave the remaining (9) st. and turn work.
(RS) Make a double st. and knit rest of the st.
*Nld 1; (RS) Knit till double st. and knit it as K1. Then, K1 and turn work.
(WS) Make a double st. and purl rest of the st.
Nld 4; (WS) Purl till double st. and purl it as 1P. Then, P1 and turn work.
(RS) Make a double st. and knit rest of the st.*
Repeat from * till * till there is 1 double st. at the end of needle 1 and at the beginning of needle 4. Knit these
double st. as K1 in the next rnd.

Jogless stripes
When knitting stripes in the round you’ll get a visible transition when changing colour which you easily can avoid.

You don’t want this!! But this you want!!

When you start a new rnd. with a new colour you’ll knit the last knitted st. on the right needle again with the new
colour. Knit the next rnd. in the new colour until the last st. (is already knitted with the new colour)
Lift the underlying st. with the right needle (in the old colour) and place it on the left needle and knit it again. You’ll
knit this st. together with the old and the new colour.

Again you can find more information and video’s on internet, (YouTube, Pinterest) about this technique.

Instructions socks size 40/41 (6/7) [8.5/9.5]

rnd. 21; K1, ssk, K4 = 6 st.
rnd. 22; S, K2, k2tog, K1 = 5 st.
Repeat rnd. 1 - 22 till there are 6 points.

Cast of the remaining 5 st. and pull skein through the last stitch, don’t break yarn!
Pick up 66 st. along the rim, divide these over 4 DPN’s and knit on in the round.
Knit 1 rnd. followed by a 1 purl rnd.
Repeat these 2 rounds till you have knitted 6 rnd. = 3 ridges of garter st.
Turn work inside out and knit 10 rnd. rib *K1/P1*.
th th
Decrease 2 st. in the first rnd. of the rib by knitting the 1 and 2 st. k2tog and repeat this halfway across the first
round again. = 64 st.

Leg
After the rib change to needle 2.25 mm and knit on in stocking st.
Knit *4 rnd. with white and 4 rnd. with green* till there are 15 stripes, ending with a white stripe.
(Add stripes if you want a longer leg, ending with white.)

Heel
Knit 1 rnd. with red. Knit Jojo-heel, see instruction Jojo-heel.
Knit 1 more rnd. with red after the heel so that there are 4 rnd. of red visible at the top of the foot.

Foot
Knit *4 rnd. with white and 4 rnd. with green* till desired length, ending with a white stripe.
Knit until the little toe isn’t visible anymore, this is because this toe has another construction than a normal knitted
toe.

Toe
The bottom of the toe needs to be ‘longer’ than the top of the toe for
the curl and you also need to decrease st. on both sides.
The bottom of the toe is therefore knitted with short rows just like the
Jojo-heel.
Divide work in top and bottom.
Needle 1 and 4 (= 32 st.) for bottom
and needle 2 and 3 (= 32 st.) for the top of the toe.
(put work on 2 needles if you like)

With red, knit 1 rnd. across all st.

Bottom - (RS) Knit till end of needle 1.
* Turn work,
th
(WS) Slip 1 st. purl wise with yarn in front, bring yarn over the needle to the back, (= the double st.)
pull yarn tight. Bring yarn under needle to front an purl till end of bottom (needle 4), turn work.
th
(RS) Slip 1 st. purl wise with yarn in front and bring yarn over the needle to the back, (= the double st.)
pull yarn tight. Knit till 2 st. before the double st. on needle 1.
K2tog and knit the double st. as K1.
Top - (RS) needle 2; K1, ssk, knit till 3 st. before end of top (needle 3), K2tog and K1.
Do not turn work, knit on along bottom!!
Bottom - (RS) Knit double st. as K1, ssk, and knit till end of bottom.
Top and bottom - (RS) Knit 1 rnd. across all st.*
Repeat from * till * till there are 12 st. on the needles. Knit 2 rnd. across all st. instead of 1 rnd.
Knit 1 sequel of short rows and decrease till there are 8 st. left, again knit 2 rnd. across all st.
Knit 4 times K2tog = 4 st. left. Knit 1 rnd. across the 4 remaining st, pull yarn through last 4 st and break yarn.

Done? Knit the second sock!

For size 34/35 - (2/3) - [3.5/4]

Knit 5 points instead of 6 and pick up 55 st. along the rim.
th
Increase in 1 rnd. to 56 st. For division Jojo-heel, see basic measurements socks.

For size 36/37 - (3.5/4) - [5.5/6.6] and size 38/39 - (4.5/5.5) - [7/8]
Decrease in 1th rnd. from 66 to 60 st. For division Jojo-heel, see basic measurements socks.

Finishing off
Close seam at the top (points) and weave in all ends.
Sew on the bells, 1 at each point and 1 at the toe.

Merry Christmas!!
Jolijn.
