Implementation of the RFID system in the country's toll ways

SLEX or South Luzon Expressway is an expressway that connects Metro Manila to the provinces
of the Calabarzon region in the Philippines. It is opposite to NLEX, which is North Luzon
Expressway and it connects Metro Manila to the provinces of the Central Luzon region in the
Philippines. These two expressways both hold a line of tollways that is used for much easier
route on the place you want to go. But, these tollways include a fee every time you used the road
for better trip. This fee turns out to be the help to recoup the costs of road construction and
maintenance. Also, for more upcoming projects to enhance the road. In accordance to this, the
Senate Public Services Committee come up with the implementation of the Radio-Frequency
Identification system in tollways.

Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology whereby digital data encoded in RFID

tags or smart labels are captured by a reader thru radio waves. By this technology, many drivers
will not struggle to get their money, open the car window, and pay in the toll cashier. This
technology will make it easy for them to pay cashless and especially now during this pandemic.
As the TRB said “Any delay in its implementation amid the Covid-19 pandemic will only make
motorists, as well as the personnel manning the toll plazas, vulnerable to unwanted and
unnecessary physical contact, and hence, exposure to the deadly coronavirus,” It targets more to
priority the safety of the physical contact

Though, there are necessary issues regarding the implementing of the RFID system in the
tollway. Many says that it will bring technical problems like: the machine will not identify the
RFID, birth pains, and cause a heavy traffic as of NLEX Corp. Given that it is newly
implemented; it will truly cause a problem for the first time. But, as the time goes by, this
technology will definitely give safety percussion for every Filipino driver. In the statement of
Tugade he said that, I’m asking our fellow Filipinos to understand that there will be birth pains
for this new project. We will have a more ideal situation in the future)," Will the Filipinos would
understand this implementation, if it is for their safety?
