    Sunlight strike Dust Complete failure of power

    0.25 0.1 0.006

    And

    Power failure Back up fails

    0.15 0.04

    Here both the power failure and back up failure must both fail in order for the power to fully leave.
    Therefore, this is an AND gate and the numbers are multiplied – 0.15 X 0.04 = 0.006.

    You then have the 3 reasons and probabilities for false alarms such as sunlight, dust and complete
    power failure. As this are OR’s you add them together so 0.25 + 0.1 + 0.006 = 0.356 = rounded up to
    0.36.

    To work out the top event you divide 1 by your answer so 1 / 0.36 = 2.777777777 – rounded up to
    2.8 so the false alarm could occur once every 2.8 years.
