EXERCISE 4 (CHAPTER 4 : AUDIO)

1. When the quality of your audio is based on the quality of your recording and not the playback
device, the digital audio is said to be:
a. Device independent
b. Device dependent
c. Digitizing
d. Synthesizing

2. Audio recorder at 44.1kHz, 16-bit stereo is considered as:

a. Phone-quality
b. CD-quality
c. Voice-quality
d. DVD-quality

3. Your audio specialist told you that the “audio should be CD-quality recording” what does he
mean?
a. The audio must be at 11 kHz, 8-bit, Stereo
b. The audio must be at 22.05 kHz, 8-bit, Stereo
c. The audio must be at 22.05kHz, 16-bit, Stereo
d. The audio must be at 44.1kHz, 16-bit, Stereo

4. Your audio specialist told you to adjust the DECAY of the MIDI files you just created. What does
he mean? Adjust the _______________________
a. Speed of the sound fades away
b. How long the sound continues
c. Speed of a sound’s volume increases
d. The decibels value

Question 5 & 6 are based on the illustrations of two audio waveform (w1 and w2)

5. Name audio waveforms label ‘W1’ :

a. Clipped wave
b. Quantized wave
c. Echoed wave
d. Trimmed wave

6. Name audio waveforms label ‘W2’:

a. Clipped wave
b. Quantized wave
c. Echoed wave
d. Trimmed wave

7. Calculate the size of the following, 5 second mono audio recording at 22.05kHz, 8 bit resolutions
(3Marks)

22.05 x 5 x (8/8) = 110250 bytes

8. Sound is one of the most important elements in multimedia since it can give great impact to the
audience. As a result, multimedia developers must know how to produce good quality of digital
audio and perform effective sound editing.

a. Define term of digital audio (3 Marks)

Answer :

-Digital audio is the actual representation of sound, stored in the forms of samples.
-Samples represent the amplitude (or loudness) of sound at a discrete point in time.
-Quality of digital recording depends on the sampling rate, (or frequency) that is, the number
of samples taken per second

b. Give TWO (2) factors that affect the quality of digitized audio (4 Marks)
Answer :

-The three sampling frequencies (sample rate) most often used in multimedia are CD-quality
44.1 kHz, 22.05 kHz and 11.025 kHz.

-The number of bits used to describe the amplitude of sound wave when sampled,
determines the sample size (commonly 8 and 16 bit)

c. Justify TWO (2) situations where you would choose MIDI over digital audio (4 Marks)
Answer :

- While working with digital audio files, you need a system with high configuration that has a
superlative processing and bandwidth

- A digital audio file is comparatively larger in size than a MIDI file and consumes a greater
amount of time in processing
