Photography - 5tips and tricks

Taking pictures in a church.

Our orthodox Orthodox churches are, with no exception, darkened, but they often have beautiful
paintings and sometimes wonderful stained glasses. Let’s assume you are a tourist, having a
camera, and wanting to take pictures in an orthodox church. You want to get the paintings and the
stained glasses also in the same picture. In this situation there must be a problem. If you adjust the
exposure for the paintings level of light, than then the stained glasses are going in clipping,
meaning white spots with no details. On the other hand, if you adjust the exposure for the stained
glasses level of light, the paintings are going to black out, meaning most of them will be dark with
no details. The solution is bracketing that is a feature of any contemporary camera. This means
that the camera takes two or three shots with different exposures. Find a steady position, the
best is to have a tripod, set the camera in bracketing mode with a gap of 1 to 3 stops (aka ev) and
go on. When you return at your home you can combine this 2 or 3 photos with a specific software
like Adobe Photoshop, or HDR, or something else. In the final product the paintings and the
stained glasses looks good with a correct level of light and details.

Shot -> S
Shoting Shooting against the sun!
To take a picture of a landscape or maybe a people group having the sun in the frame, you can try
following settings: put the aperture at 16 value and the speed at the same value as ISO. For
example, if the scene is static with no people or other creature you can put the speed at 1/100 s
and ISO at 100 value. If there are children or creatures like horses or cattle increase the speed and
the ISO value according to the new speed value. Also if you have people you must to (verbele
modale fara prepozitie) use at least one additional light, meaning a flash on top of the camera. The
flash built in camera is better than nothing, but is strongly recommended to have an external one.
Take care to not to exceed the synchronization time that is usually 1/200 s or 1/250 s, and it is
specific to each camera.

What if the bride is taller than the bridegroom.

In a such case there is nothing to do, but the photographer can improve the results with a little
change of the habit. Usually the photographer takes the shots from the right side of the church
closer to the bride and further away from the bridegroom. He only have has to go to the other
side of the church, thus the bridegroom looks to be taller because of the perspective.

Taking macro shots without a macro lens.

We say about a photo that is macro (We call a photo macro) when ratio of size image on the
sensor and the size of subject is minimum 1:2, but usually 1:1 or bigger. This means that you can
view on the screen the finest details of an insect or of the grass thread or of whatever you want.
For this kind of shots there are dedicated lenses that aren't always affordable. If you don't have a
19
Lesson 4 Pagina: 20 Prezentul simplu – Prezentul Continuu

macro lens you can use a second lens reversed back held before of in front of the main lens. This
second lens can be from an old camera, for example I have one from a Kiev camera.

Adjust the speed depending on focal length.

For a static scene it is recommended to adjust the shutter speed at a value equal or bigger than
the focal length. This is not a problem for a prime lens with focal length equal to 35 mm or 50 mm,
but it can be a problem if we take a shot with telephoto at 300mm or 600mm. Increasing the
speed up to 1/600s might be an exposure problem if the scene is not well lighted lit.

Understanding the MENU

If you are going to be working in a restaurant, it is important that you understand the menu. Different
menus use different words to mean the same thing. They also use certain words to make food sound
more delicious. It isn't just the server who should know the menu. Hosts, bartenders an bussers may
also get asked questions about the menu from the guests. Cooks have to know the menu inside-out as
well. After all, if an item says it is smothered in mozarella cheese it can't just have a sprinkling of
cheddar.

Most menus are divided in two sections. You may need to help a guest find entrees, or desserts. A guest
might call a drink a beverage or a refreshment. Learn the different terms that are used so that you can

Lesson 14 Pagina: 88 How to sign an email/letter in English-Valedictions

Vocabulary
Valediction bun-ramas, adio
valedictions modalitati de incheiere (ramas bun) in scris

‘Kind regards’ and ‘Best regards’ are English bad!

The following are a few common English valedictions for you to use in your emails, and when you
might (or might not) want to use them.
Thank you for considering my job application! I really appreciate it.
Sincerely,
John
Sincerely is considered to be one of the most formal English valedictions. Using Sincerely
indicates that you are being sincere about your message and its content. This is a very common
way to sign job application letters or messages to people that you don’t know very well. You
wouldn’t, however, sign an informal letter to a good friend with Sincerely; it would look very out
of place.

Another formal valediction you can use is Yours truly.

I have finished coding the software and will start testing it for bugs tomorrow morning.
Thanks,
Elizabeth
Thanks is a very common English valediction. It does not necessarily mean that you are thanking
the person you are writing for anything that he or she did; rather, it is used in a general sense,
perhaps thanking the reader for their attention or for making it to the bottom of your email!
This is not often used in formal communications, but is very commonly found in emails from one
coworker to another, and can also be used when corresponding with your manager. In a similar
fashion you can also write Thank you or Much appreciated; these are considered to be more
formal than a simple Thanks.

I’m heading home to feed the dog. I’ll be back after lunch.
Cheers,
Thomas
Cheers is a very British, Scottish or Irish way to sign a letter; many people from the British Isles
sign their correspondence this way. It is also somewhat common in other Commonwealth
countries such as Canada and Australia. It is considered very casual; you would never sign a job
application letter with Cheers. Cheers is a word commonly used to offer a toast (with a drink) in
England.

Please remember that all power will be shut off in the building this coming Saturday.

Ashley

Lesson 14 Pagina: 89 How to sign an email/letter in English-Valedictions

Regards is short for Best regards or Kindest regards, which in a way is saying “best wishes” or
“all the best to you”. In a similar fashion, Best and All the best are becoming popular ways to
sign emails in English. Regards is considered a less formal and more friendly way to sign a
message.
****

Best regards is appropriate when addressed to an aquaintance with whom the writer is on a first
name basis and the writer feels the need to be a bit effusive.

Kind regards would usually be seen in correspondence to someone with only formal relations. I've
seen lawyers use it, even a former colleague who is otherwise a great guy, but it has alway
struck me as pretentious and fusty.

It's hard to go wrong with very truly yours, which has come to mean I'm done now, here comes
my signature block.

Hello, we have a plotter DOT180 that was bought this week, and want to ask your help for 2
issues:
-I wasn't able to install the drivers on a W7/64 system. The message was: "The driver
software was not successfully installed" and “Ultra Wide Printer” has a yellow triangle
in Device Manager;
-is there any possibility to integrate the plotter DOT180 with our "Investronica Sistemas"? I
mean that the technical personnel wish prefered to avoid to transform in HPGL format,
instead they want to send directly to the plotter queue.
Thank you.
