EXPLORING VARIOUS IMPLANT SITES TO AID IN RETENTION OF

MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHESIS

BACKGROUND: The prosthetic restoration of dentoalveolar and maxillofacial defects has

significantly improved with development of new materials and advances in clinical, surgical and
lab techniques. Conventional methods for retention of maxillofacial prosthesis are far from
providing efficient and satisfactory results. Traditionally, anatomical undercuts, adhesives,
magnets, precision, semi-precision attachments and mechanical retention have been used alone
or in combination to address the retention issues. But, in the last few decades, osseointegrated
implants have been used intraorally and extraorally and have greatly enhanced the retention of
maxillofacial prosthesis. There are several intraoral and extraoral sites that are available for the
placement of implants to provide anchorage for prosthesis.

SUMMARY: The evolution of osseointegrated implants has overcome the support, stability and
retention problems of maxillofacial prosthesis relative to adhesive attachment of prosthesis by
establishing a direct structural and functional connection between ordered living bone and
surface of a load carrying implant. However skill of dentist comes into play in selecting the site
of implant placement for success of prosthesis. This paper explores various sites of implant
placement which are already in use, as well as other potential sites of placement, for maxilla
facial prosthesis.

CONCLUSION: Site selection for placement of implant for maxillofacial prosthesis determines
the overall prognosis of treatment.
