BEYOND THE HORIZON- HOLLYWOOD PROSTHETICS

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial Prosthodontics is a speciality of dentistry which deals with

rehabilitation of patients with defects or disabilities that were present when born or developed
due to disease or trauma. In other instances, a prosthesis for the face or body may be indicated
for cosmetic and psychological reasons. The scope of utilization of prosthetic materials goes
beyond maxillofacial prosthetics. The multibillion dollar film industry, worldwide depends on
imaginative and accurate use of prosthetic materials.

SUMMARY: As prosthetics evolve, their use in movies became more and more ground
breaking. Prosthetics and special effects make-up is used in film to turn the cast into characters,
or advance a storyline with effects like injuries or ageing. It’s even used to create the life-like
puppets or dummies, like corpses, you see on screen. The demand for prosthetics to look and
move like real skin has lead to the popularity of silicone. The other prosthetic materials used can
be foam latex, gelatine, gypsum or other similar materials.

CONCLUSION: The most basic of applications can be used to simply hide defects, mechanisms
like blood tubes and incoming bullet hits. The most complex will render the actor completely
unrecognizable as a human. All these techniques to reinvent aesthetics is possible with the help
of various evolving prosthetic techniques and materials.
