Example 14 : Design of a Staggered Free

Standing Wall
A brick masonry wall of staggered shape (see
Fig. E-45) is 23 cm thick and is subject to a wind
pressure 750 N/ m2. Determine the maximum
height of the wall if mortar used is: (a) 1 cement :
1 line : 6 sand (Ml grade), (b) 1 cement : 6 sand
(M2 grade).
(a) Consider module length AB of the wall
which is 2.31 + 0.22 = 2.53 m long. If ft is
the permissible tensile stress in masonry
L 2.31 2
All dimensions in metres.

= 0.017 2 + 0.003 31
= 0.205 m4
0.565
Y=- 2
= 0.282 m
Thus inserting values in the equation:
f,=+vH
= 950 H’ X 0.282
0.205
- 20 000 H (N/m’)
= 1310 Hz-2000 H
Permissible value of tension for 1 : 1 : 6.
Cement mortar across bed joint

131 Hz - 200 H- 700 = 0
Solving this quadratic equation we get
H=
200 + J2002 + 4 X 131 x 700
2 X 131
= 200 + 638

b) If mortar used is of 1 cement : 6 sand mix
(M2 grade), value of permissible tensile stress
is 0.05 N/mm2 = 50 X lo3 N/m’. Sub-
Stituting in the above equation,
5 000 = 1 310 Hz - 2 000 H
131 Hz-200 H-500=0
SP 20(S&T) : 1991
Solving this equation for H we get
H=
200 + 42002 + 4 x 13 1 x 500
2 X 131
= 200 + 550
262
= 2.86 m say 2.8 m
NOTE- While planning and designing a free standing
staggered wall, it should be borne in mind that total length
of projecting flanges on either side of a rib should not
exceed 6 times the flange thickness. In other words module
of a staggered wall should be limited to 12 times the thickness
of wall plus width of the rib or pier formed by staggering.
Thus in the above example upper limit of module works
out to 12 X 0.22 + 0.22 = 2.86 m as against 2.50 actualiy
provided in the wall in question.
