Welcome to Great Shapes Stationery—a resource to help you add fun and variety to
writing activities all year long!
On the following pages you’ll find:

to be simple enough for students to cut out without help.

Using the Stationery

You and your students are sure to find hundreds of creative ways to use Great Shapes
Stationery in your classroom. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Sensational Shape Books

Showcase students’ writing in books of all shapes!
Have students select a stationery design that fits their
story—the Giant Pumpkin (page 9) for a Halloween
story for example—and then create a shape book by
cutting out and stapling the stationery pages together.
You can also make a shape book as a class, with each
student contributing one page.
Create Cards for All Occasions

Invite children to use the stationery to create greeting
cards. They can make personalized birthday cards
with the Birthday Cake stationery (page 21) by
cutting out the appropriate number of candles and
gluing them to the cake. The Valentine Heart (page
19) is, of course, perfect for a Valentine’s Day card
and the Super Snowman (page 17) is just right for a
jolly holiday card.

Festive Displays
For a new way of displaying students’ work and
decorating your room, turn your shape stationery into
hanging ornaments. Have students color one sheet of
stationery and use a second sheet for writing. Glue
the two sheets together and trim. Punch a hole in the
top, thread a string through, and hang around your
room. Try the Happy Bat (page 23) at Halloween and
the Thanksgiving Turkey (page 13) in the fall.
Beginning of the Year Displays

Start the year with a getting-to-know-you activity using the Picture Frame stationery
(page 45). Ask students to draw a self-portrait on one sheet of the stationery and write
a mini-biography on a second sheet. Display their work on a bulletin board or publish
the students’ portraits as a class book to share with parents.
Story Starters
Try using the stationery for story starters. Pass out
sheets of the stationery and have students write stories
inspired by the picture. For example, students might
write a tale about a king and queen on the Storybook
Castle paper (page 47).
Terrific Take-Home Notes

Send messages home in style using the stationery in this
book. Announce your next open house on the School House
stationery (page 49) or copy a notice about the Fall Festival
on the Basket of Apples stationery (page 7).
Theme Units
Use the stationery to complement a theme unit or theme study. Digging into
dinosaurs? Invite children to write or dictate dinosaur tales on the Spotted Dinosaur
paper (page 35). Learning about the ocean? Encourage kids to record ocean-related
facts on the Fantastic Fish stationery (page 29). Inviting students to use the
appropriate stationery for activities and assignments throughout your units will really
bring them to life.

Perfect Pet Stories
Have students write about their favorite dog or cat—or a pet they would like to
have—on the Dog with a Bone or Cuddly Cat stationery (pages 41 and 33).
Interactive Bulletin Boards

GUESS WHAT’S
At holiday time, make an interactive IN THE BOX!
display using the Gift Box stationery
(page 43). Give each student two sheets
of the Gift Box paper. On one sheet of
paper, have students draw a picture of a
gift they would like to give or receive. On
the second sheet of paper, have them
write three clues that describe the
present. Staple the pages together, with
the clues on top, and post on a bulletin
board. When your display is complete,
students can take turns guessing what
each present is and then lift the flap to
find out if they have guessed correctly.
And Don’t Forget...

Keep a selection of stationery available for students to use for letters, notes to friends,
or just for fun.
