Case write-up methodology

This method is an improvised version of SOSTAC to analyze cases, formulate marketing


communication strategy and come to a conclusion.

A. Introduction and background – What company? History and nature of business.


B. Current Issues- What is the existing matter of concern? How is the company doing? Has the
company been using wrong information systems? How is current IS and IT affecting the
organization?
C. Problem Statement- What is the root issue or problem that can solve all/most of the problems?
D. Situation Analysis – Where we are now?
I. Internal Situation – Controllable (PTP)
a. Performance – Identify how is the company performing? Is it working to its best?
b. Target End Users –
i. Which end users are the system trying to ease?
ii. What are the most suitable departments that are in need of improvement in the
system?
iii. Can the existing IS serve them properly?
iv. Are end users satisfied?
v. Does the current IS improve employee’s productivity?
vi. Who is involved in decision-making unit (DMU)?
c. Management Sponsorship –
i. How the top level management shown commitment with the existing system?
ii. Is existing IS expensive to maintain?
II. External Situation – Uncontrollable (PEST)
a. Political – What laws or regulations affecting IS initiative decision?
b. Economic – How does the economy affect current IS?
c. Social – How are the social trends and changes in attitudes and IS
implementation?

d. Technology – How influencing is fast changing technology?

III. Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat (SWOT) Analysis of existing system.

E. Objective- What is your move to influence and/or eradicate the problem? What information
system are you going to use?

a. Business/Information System objective: how should proposed system affect the


productivity of the employees?
b. A clear objective should be SMART:
i. Specific
ii. Measureable
iii. Actionable
iv. Realistic
v. Time specific

F. Recommendation of Strategy- How we get there?


a. Custom built software or Commercial Off the Shelf software applications
b. Selection of System Implementer / IS Consulting Agency
c. What Information System? (ERP/CRM/SCM/eCommerce/DSS/MIS/KMS/ES/TPS …)
d. Selection of system
e. Implementation Strategy
f. Affected Users
g. Economic Feasibility: Software/Hardware/People/Network Resources costs
h. Business Processes Reengineering or Business Improvement required before
implementing the system
i. SWOT analysis of current system, if required.
G. Tactics- Conversion Strategy
a. Directly cut the old system
b. Run both systems for certain period for assurance of successful completion of the IS
project.
c. Show Project Implementation Time Line.
H. Conclusion-
a. Restatement of objective and recommendation succinctly.
b. Any future strategy
